check the book for your solar controller. Mine from Renogy says it will do harm to the controller if the solar panels are connected with no battery connected...no place for the juice to go to.
so
when I did my install I made up some clear labels at the disconnect breakers that I out on both sides of the controller, to turn the panels off first and on last.
so while I'm a huge proponent of disconnecting the batteries whenever it's not being used, now I just leave my house battery connected, and the solar offsets the drains on it while in storage. Now I just disconnect using the use/store switch that controls the disconnect relay...that way solar still has the batteries but most of the loads are removed.
