Shocks, check them

To whom it may concern,
I have 2016 F-550 stock shocks with only 26,000 miles on them.
Free to whoever wants them, you pay shipping, just kidding.
See pic for your viewing pleasure.
Check your shocks.

Looks like 4 dirty shocks, no obvious leakage that I can see. How much resistance on extension/contraction?

Are they supposed to? I thought they were supposed to dampen motion in both directions.

They are supposed to compress and rebound, only the 1 did the rebound, the rest just stayed compressed

The only shocks I know of that do that are:
Air Shocks
Gas Filled Shocks
Coil Over Shocks
Shocks with defective valves

So I'm assuming these are gas shocks?

Those definitely needed changing. I'm betting the ride was noticably better!
When buying new they normally have a wire or something keeping them compressed as it's VERY difficult to try to compress them by hand for installation, once installed cut the tie.

Devil Dog,
Thanks for the laugh. Funny thing, when I was changing the shocks, Drivers side rear was missing the top nut. Mmmmm
Blue lock tight was used.

same thing i observed on my 2018 Thor vegas 24.1 E450. I am really happy w/ the billstein shocks that i installed.
I just threw the old shocks in the trash, i figured that was ok/allowed.

How much work was it to change them Terry? I have not looked closely at that on my F-550.... it was on my list once I dealt with the front cap, slide, etc.

I really don’t recall, maybe 2 hours. Remember, I’m retired union, take 1 off, break, replace break.
Or in laymen’s terms, take off, beer, cigar, repeat.
Seriously, I had a friend help with the fronts, I held the shock, he turned the top nut.
Air gun off all others, replaced then tighten all back by hand.
Was an enjoyable task once I surpassed the learning curve, righty tighty lefty loosey from looking upside down.
Terry
Ps. <~~~~~~~~~my new grand daughter

Bilsteins came stock on my 2015 F53 chassis. They transfer every single defect in the roadway to the coach. I was looking at replacing at least the front with the Koni FSD because they claim to "include a special valve that filters out annoying vibrations before they enter the coach". But at $176 each I balked. It's been a long time since I changed shocks on any vehicle but back when I was a mechanic shocks were in the $20 to $30 range. I gues there's a reason they call them "FSD Gold Shocks".
