A/C will not start up and it kills the Generator?

I have tried to turn on the Air. Cond. and the Onan 4000 just dies. It will run and does charge the batteries. I have tried this 4 times.

Does the A/C work on shore power? If not then 2 things could be wrong. Bad locked up compressor or bad burned up start capacitor. ($15.00 part) Go up on the roof and remove the A/C cover. Check the shape of the start and run capacitors connected to the contactor. See if they are leaking or out of shape. Think puffed up. Have someone turn it on while you watch and listen. Spin the fan motor and see if its locked up.

or you may have a 'clogged' fuel filter, as there may be enough flow to provide a start/idle run speed which may satisfy the battery charger(Converter, or Inverter? You don't say what yr/make/model RV you have), but when the a/c is turned on and the generator needs to speed up to provide the power, it bogs down and cuts off...

Try alternate loads, like the electric water heater element and the microwave. If you get the same result to have a generator issue. If those work fine then you probably have an Air Conditioner issue.

Be careful if you decide to check the A/C capacitors yourself. They can hold a charge even when the power is off. Although they will sometimes show visible evidence when they go bad, they don't always do so.

Some multimeters are able to test capacitors, but be sure to safely discharge them before testing.

FYI. AC = Alternation Current (Electricity) A/C = Air conditioning. That way we are all on the same page.
