Generator keeps trying to restart

Here's a new one. We are on a trip and ran the generator all night to run the air conditioner. In the morning I shut the generator off. A few minutes later I heard it trying to restart? It would turn over few times then quit, pause a few seconds and try again. The only way I could stop it was to disconnect the heavy power line to the solenoid. Any ideas? Stuck solenoid?

I appreciate the ideas and advice.

Since no one has jumped in here goes

Not the solenoid but perhaps a short in the control wire. The solenoid takes energy to activate so typically it either works or don't

Do you have an AGS? If so start there

Anything smell hot or like burnt wiring when you disconnected the cable?

Switch sticking really sounds like the logical place to start

Since you mentioned you were running the generator to power the A/C.....

I'm assuming you don't have an AGS and it is set to have the generator automatically start based on thermostat's demand for cooling.

You mean DOES have AGS?

I'm thinking his AGS is trying tom start the generator to charge the house batteries because the USE/STORE was in STORE when the generator was running. That's why it's "It would turn over few times then quit, pause a few seconds and try again." House batteries too weak to start the generator.

I had the exact same problem. They replaced the generators control board under warranty and that fixed my problem. Hope that helps!

I meant DOESN't have an AGS.... because that would be the first thing I checked if that was happening to me.

AC wouldn't be running with the use/store in store.

Yes it would, the converter would supply the required 12 VDC control power as well as DC lights and all other DC loads just like it would if he was plugged into SP.

But if he DOESN'T have an AGS, what would be trying "to have the generator automatically start based on thermostat's demand for cooling"?

Unless you meant:

Once again the OP didn’t give year make model. Size of generator, etc. so all are just guessing.

chances are:

A) you have an AGS(auto generator starter) and it is set to either TEMP or VOLTAGE and trying to crank the generator to run the a/c unit, or charge the batteries

B) you have the dreaded 'ghost' generator starting due to moisture buildup in the starter switch(the one ON the generator itself), or on the generator's starter solenoid.

if you can start the generator manually, both from the inside Switch, and the switch on the Generator, I would suspect the generator itself is operating normally. the AGS could then be the culprit. Turn it to OFF(NOT ENABLED), or go into the setting for TEMP and/or VOLTAGE and make sure they are not in play.

Thanks and a update

Thank everyone for your suggestions.

I don't have an AGS on the coach. I left the generator disconnected for a day and then reconnected it. It did not try to restart. Later I did start it with the remote switch and it ran correctly and shut off with out a problem. Maybe it was moisture in the switch. Anyway, I will keep an eye on it and see if the problem comes back.
