Carefree Awning Won't Extend

First time to ever have a problem with the awning. Rolled in fine this morning, parked for the evening and it won't extend. Checked the fuse, it's fine. Any ideas?

Russ

My front support has gotten stuck a few times. You shouldn't have to but try giving the awning arms a slight tug away from the RV.

Still Stuck

GMac, thanks for the advice but I can't get the awning to move out at all. Guess I'm destined to visit a repair shop. Sure glad it rolled up dry!

Have you tried call Carefree of Colorado? Might save you a trip to the dealer.

Here is the link for their support info.

Mine extends okay but is very slow when retracting. Sometimes requires a few back and forths before it will retract.

The problem with my Carefree awning is when I open it, it stay open for few seconds then is closed on it own. There is no winds. Mind of it own I guess it does not like the sun, lol. Any inputs on why it closed on it own. I did email Carefree and waiting to hear from them.

Have you folks checked on the Carefree recall info. I started a thread on this earlier in the year.

The thread is:

Carefree Awning Website

Thanks for the link. I'll give them a try on Monday, hopefully it will be a "carefree" fix.

You have a rocker switch to operate the motor? It may be going bad.

Do you use a rocker switch to extend your awning? If so, that would be the switch.

I was camping in Ohio last month and could not get my Carefree awning to extend. I have always had a problem with the forward arm not extending unless I gave it a thump or pull-this time I couldn't get it to move at all even when I climbed on the roof and pushed/pulled on the arm. I then found that the campground I was at was a Carefree authorized warranty repair facility. I called the office and they sent a tech out to my site right away. The tech took a considerable amount of time trying to get the arm to extend then finally climbed on the roof and gave the top of the arm a good push with his foot and it extended. The tech found that the silicone bead on the arm frame protecting the wires going into the coach had seeped over onto the arm effectively gluing them together. He checked all the other components and made sure everything was OK and then wished me a good day with no charge.

Got home, pulled the Daybreak into the barn and, of course, the awning extended without hesitation. I did contact the company and they replied the next day. I think my problem is a bad switch. Guess I have to replace all three since they are mounted together with the battery cut off and step override.

Thanks for all the great responses, very helpful.

You should be able to replace the single switch after removing the bezel.

I had email the company and informed them of my problem with the awning and they email me back with 2 manuals. I emailed them back and told them thanks for the manuals but it still did not help me with the awning problem.

Call Thor and see if they will send a new switch. If not I posted a link for RV hardware on the following thread

http://www.thorforums.com/forums/f8/...ware-1654.html

I believe they have they manufacture the rocker switches for the awnings.

awing

Mine, every once in awhile wouldn't work, and then for some reason would work fine. after a lot of tracking down (and absolutely no help from Thor tech), the problem turned out to be a bad circuit breaker, not the rocker switch. circuit breaker is located with 3 others by the battery control center under the hood. the circuit breaker is an automotive 12v one, easily purchased an most auto parts stores. also had a similar problem with my slide, an it too was a bad circuit breaker in the same location.

My Choice, you didn't say which model of Carefree you have but if it has auto-retract there is a setting for how much wind speed it requires to activate the auto-retract. You might have a look in your owner's manual or installation manual to see where that setting is located and increase it.

I had a problem once with mine not wanting to retract. I stood on a stood and gripped the motor and slightly turned it by had just a few degrees. The spring is very tight and I had to use a good deal of umpth. Just moved the motor a little bit. Went back inside hit the switch and it retracted. Haven't had a problem since.

Did have one "self-induced" problem opening it once. It started to rain and I retracted the awning but forgot to take the piece of water pipe insulation (like a pool noodle) that I put on the arm to keep the entrance door from banging into the support arm. The insulation got jammed in the support arm and would not allow the awning to open. Pulled out the insulation and all was fine again.

Carefree sent me a new sensor free of charge and shipping. I replaced the sensor and no more problem.
