Coach A/C question

Have a 2006 Four Winds class C 31 P. Roof A/C seems weak but I don't have anything to compare it to. I believe it is a Dometic. Temperature gun says it I should blowing out 54 degrees. Is this about right on an 80 degree day?

I would love to check the coolant but think it is completely sealed. Anyone figure a way around that?

Search for Delta T on the forum and read more than you want to know about checking an AC unit.

BTW, get rid of the temperature gun. That is your first mistake.

Unfortunately, those Dometic units cannot be recharged. The only thing you can do is replace it. I have read about someone cutting the freon lines and installing valves, but, if you could find someone, I do not think it would be worth it - especially on a 10 year old unit. I paid about $800 to have mine replaced several years ago - including labor.

Thanks for the replies.

- why get rid of the temperature gun?
- is there a way to diagnose if it needs replaced or that is what a 15k btu a/c feels like?

Again thank you!

Try this YouTube video for a starter. Google "how to test RV A/C" for more.

Need to use a thermometer with a probe to get into the airflow (partially inside the vent). A temperature gun does not get into the airflow and only reads the surface temperature of the surrounding area.

That 54 degrees should be lower, given the 80 degree outside air temp, BUT!!!! how long had it been running when you checked the temp, and what was the inside air temperature being returned to the unit for cooling? Let it run for a good 30 minutes or more, then recheck. Another thing to think about, how humid was it the day you checked it. In high humidity conditions, a lot of cooling energy is consumed removing water from the recirculating air, therefore not available for cooling.
