coach entry door strut connection

Hi, Vegas 25.2 The attachment for the gas strut door closer is very loose and feels like it's going to fail soon. I tried to remove the aluminum threshold molding that it's attached to. (removed only visible screws). it's stuck.... doesn't move in the slightest. tried screwdriver to pry it off but don't want to bend it. Need to access under this part to tighten or replace the attachment point for the strut..... anybody have any experience with this?"

Mine comes unscrewed all the time. On mine the end on the threshold is just a ball and socket, I just pop the little black metal band up and you can pull it off. If you have any loctite apply it to the thread and reinstall.

Mine comes loose too. I've probably reattached it about 6 times since buying the RV new in Aug 2015. Mine just screws back in to a small ball socket.

Is it just the arm coming off the ball? or the ball coming out of the threshold?

I removed mine within 2 months of purchase. I hated the way it worked in the wind and the pressure it put on the door. I put on a door stop to protect the RV and have never regretted it.

On mine it is the arm unscrewing from the ball. I just position the door so the arm lines up with the hole in the ball and then screw the rod back on the threads in the ball. Never had a problem with the ball coming loose from under the threshold.

Hey I've just had my entry door strut pop off the ball stud on the step plate. I knew it was just a matter of time before this was going to happen. Can you show me what you did on your 34.4? Where you placed the door stop and the particular door stop you used. Thank you

I'm sorry, my coach is in storage so I can't get a picture but this is the description:

Shepherd 9568 2-3/16" White Cushion Door Stops, 2 Count

I purchased it from Walmart for less than $5. It is s simple peal and stick application and has been on the side of the coach for over a year. I positioned it to line up with the handle of the door. It allows the door to swing all the way open, flush enough with the coach, wind doesn't catch it and blow it shut.

My only regret is I didn't do this the day I brought the rig home.

I'm sold! Did you end up removing the stud from the step plate or just leave it there?

I noticed on the Tiffin Open Road, they use these a bump stop so the door opens all the way. Similar to the Airstreams, they use a latch system to keep the door open.

Thank you!

I opted against the type that holds the door open because, knowing me, I was afraid I would run into it. I thought I could add the type that latches the door back later but have never found it necessary. The wind just doesn't catch the door when it is open all the way back to the coach.

I left the little ball on the base plate in place. It is not in the road when entering/exiting the RV.

I was thinking something along these lines. This is what the Tiffin coaches use to keep their doors open in combination with a bump stop.

Thank you for the wisdom

That is what we added to our coach, except made of plastic. As far as the door not blowing around with the wind, we like the door latch as we have had the door blow shut when not using it. It also has the effect of acting as a "stand-off" so the door has no opportunity to bang against the side.

The original round stud is still there, we didn't remove it. It doesn't interfere with anything else.

Is this what you are using? 3 1/2 Inch Plastic T Entry Door Holder - Colonial White - RV Designer E233 - RV Entry Door Hardware - Camping World
Yes, that is exactly what we are using except in black, to match our trim package. Note that there are different lengths available (some are longer to hold door open at more of an angle.)

We had one of those plastic door holders on our 5th wheel. After about 5-7 years they do get brittle from UV and tend to break (just mentioning that you may want to keep in mind that you'll have to replace it after a while).

Thank you for the pics!

Were you a bit nervous about drilling holes in the side of the RV? Does it seem pretty sturdy?

It works pretty well. I do expect as Chance said that it will become brittle over time, but everything breaks and you just roll with it.

As far as drilling holes, we have done some pretty extensive mods (especially on the roof!) and as long as you use Dicor or some sealant, you should be just fine. I used clear silicone caulk for this project. That doesn't mean we aren't nervous about drilling into the RV, but doing a little research and using a good stud finder helps. You also just have to hope there aren't wires or plumbing lines behind where you want to drill. (Not much chance of that in the door or near the front window frame.)
