Coach Stairs

I own a 2017 Thor Synergy. After 4 years and 22000 miles the coach stairs sometimes open and sometimes won't. No rhyme or reason. Just sometimes work and sometimes won't. Do any of you more experienced RV owners have any suggestions?

Plastic gears fail but yours may be a short in the motor

Be sure you keep the pivot points clean and lubricated

Pivot Points are clean and lubricated but you make a good point regarding a possible short in the motor. Is that repairable or does the motor need to be replaced? Thanks for your suggestions.

The door close sensor on my Synergy is located on the bottom of the screen door. It was installed with two sided tape which got pushed out just a smidge from its original installation location, which prevented the receptor sensor from acknowledging whether the door was open or closed. I repositioned the sensor on the bottom of the screen door and it began working properly again. HOWEVER, I was just on a trip and the stairs ceased raising or closing despite the sensors seemingly in the correct position. Lookin to trouble shoot this. Did you get your issue resolved? If so, was it something besides the sensor getting out of place? Thanks!

The motor could be going out on you. Also check your ground wire underneath. Make sure it’s getting good contact.

If you do need a motor, Amazon

Also, apparently the stairs motor is one of a few electrical items which are connected directly to the chassis battery, and not the coach batteries. The fuse to between the motor and the chassis battery is located on a panel connected to and located on the side of the battery, which has fuses which can go blow. Tomorrow, I intend to pull the cover to the chassis battery, which is a bit cumbersome on a Mercedes Sprinter, and see if that fuse has blown. Easier and cheaper than pulling/replacing the staircase motor for sure. Wish me luck, and thanks for your advice as well!

Thanks for the suggestions. While the motorhome was in for winterization service and slide service the stairs were checked. All wires and connections checked out. No fuse issues. The conclusion is motor needs to be replaced. The unit is in storage now. I will attack this problem in March before or next trip.
