Crazy door/compartment key broke in my lock!

I can't believe my factory key broke in the
door/compartment. I got some out and a small piece still in.
Tweezers do not work.
There is a screw on the back I will try to remove and
Shake it out!

If I have another key made and places that make a steel key!

Prior to this episode: did you ever lubricate the lock with graphite?

Use a dy lube.
I think that the, stuff they sell for this purpose has graphite in it.
Stuff likexWD-40 will catch any and all road debris that
Gets close to it, and you'll have a gummed-up lock...

So what was the broken key made of if not steel?

Put it within the reaches of a magnet, and see what happens...

Don't know if any steel key blanks. Those would surely be hard to cut and wear out a machine fast, if it could even do it.

Most keys are a soft brass alloy.

I've had 2 keys break in the compartment locks. I now carry spares. My locks have corrosion due to road salt, so they can be difficult to operate. I have lubed them and got them moving fairly well, but I should probably just replace all the locks.

Something like these that have 'real' keys.

Just make sure they don't use the generic CH751 key. There's about 60 bajillion of those keys out there. Every RV I owned between 1979 and 2016 used that key, and we even used them at work on storage and equipment cabinets.

Hey, if they all use the same key, then you don't have to worry about them all being keyed alike.

You can also get cam locks with the cylindrical style keys, which are probably more secure, and the keys more durable.
