Shelves in the “garage”

(Sorry if this is a duplicate) We have a 2017 30.2 ACE. Want to create wire shelves in top third of this bin. Hesitant to drop a 1/2” screw into those walls. What’s under that veneer? Anyone have a storage bin mod to share?Click image for larger version

We use our rv to our best advantage.

I'd drill all the way through and use elevator bolts(look it up) from The Outside.
I think the next owner will appreciate the extra thought given to the super-mounted shelves.

If it was my project, I'd build a freestanding frame for the shelving. No screws to worry about. Ideal would be light weight scrap aluminum. You are on the right track with wire shelving. Keep in mind not to pack the space with too much weight.
If you build it, please post some pics!

I screwed 3 long thin strips of wood up high in there to support a 1/4" piece of plywood to hold two of our chairs.
Helps the alleviate the "pile". Rig has made two trips to Cabo and very solid .

I like this approach also.

If they were made into
French cleats(look it up)
That would be very handy.

Love to see a pic if easy to share. What length screw were you comfortable with into those walls?

This is a good idea also. By freestanding you mean it’s legs would be on bottom of bin? We slide some equipment around down there too. Not much weight. Chairs, rug, etc. just trying to avoid the pile.

Thanks All.

Siesta 24ST I used plain plastic shelving, free standing against forward wall. No problems. the tube frame can be cut to any length you want for shelf spacing. Mounted rack for fishing rods on back wall. Compartment is rated for 500 pounds.

Probably used 1" or 1 1/4" screws here. I always use shortest possible. Still looking for better uses for this space.

You win most helpful reply today! So a 1” screw with those under rails caused no issues and plenty secure? Chairs and such is our storage goal too. Thanks All!

Ya most all that lightweight panel im sure is 1/4" luan and I've screwed into it on several projects. You'll want a screw that uses every bit of that 1/4" but so far haven't had any problems running into anything underneath. I even built a liquor cabinet that holds 14 bottles and hung it over the rear dinette seat with i think 6 screws and cleats. Two trips to Cabo and back to Oregon. Still a very solid mount. I really think the cleats seem to help the whole strength of the screws.
