Great advice. Our sensors work fine, but I actually calculate how full the tanks are by how many days we've camped. Works well enough!

Same here.
Black and gray tanks are experience driven.
Fresh water and propane...ok, I'll semi-trust them.

Doesn't make sense???

What hasn't been mentioned yet is the chance of the dreaded poo dam. The coaches with a passenger side toilet have a sewer pipe that drops on a sloped portion of the black tank that remains dry till the tank is almost full. If the operator of the toilet doesn't use sufficient water during use the TP and solids hit the dry slope and stay there, getting hardened into a sludge of sh*t and paper that will back up the toilet. Our ACE in its first life was a rental.
On our first trip out after we purchased the MH the black tank backed up and had to be rammed out with a rubber hose after I initially cleared the blockage with a sewer snake. We suspect the prior renters were never instructed on how to properly flush the toilet or as renters of the RV chances are they didn't really care.
After experiencing a poo dam firsthand, we have added a pre-flush with dish soap to lube the slide then basically follow Judge's procedures. Since the initial poo dam, we have not had any other issues.
As has been said, the extra water involved using a curb side toilet does not lend itself well to extended boon docking trips.

I talked about damming way back in my first post but once the OP clarified he had a Class C with the toilet on the passenger side it wss becoming evident that he wasn’t opening the second valve.

Correct when all is said and done. While on road for 7 months we did many tests of our black tank so that we did not rely on the sensors.
For us 4 days is easy.
Tried 5 days twice no issues.
End of 5 into 6 saw rise of water just below toliet neck and flushed each time

Well I sure wish the previous owner had mentioned the second valve on the passenger side. Seeing as he put 83K in miles on it, you would have thought he would give me a heads up. Nothing was mentioned in the Thor resource guide. I am going to try the remedies you all mentioned here. Thanks for saving me a lot of frustration!

How long does it take ridx to work?

The enzymes in RID-X® begin working as soon as they come in contact with water. The bacteria take 2-4 hours to germinate and then begin to break down solid waste. If the temperature and conditions are favorable, then the bacteria will multiply to the maximum level that the environment will allow in about 2-4 days.

And, yes, it will work in an RV holding tank. Do you really want a detailed explanation as to how I know?

The dish soap and Calgon routine is a time proven treatment. The Calgon beads are TSP, trisodium phosphate. Some folks use laundry soda. They are all water softeners, they make it slippery.

For the actual dumping, I use a clear elbow hose attachment at outlet to see how clear the flush water is running. Open your gray valve first for a few seconds to sicken the hose. Close, then empty the black. When dry camping, without water to rinse the black, I'll run gray water into the black line to rinse it as I drain the gray.

Valterra clear elbow with back flush.
There are others without the water inlet.

Thanks for all the advice. I picked up a clear elbow for the black water tank. I also added Borax, Dawn dish soap and a tide pod, mixed in a 5 gallon bucket, to the black water tank. On day 3 now with absolutely no smell and the top (full) sensor now seems to work as the tank was reading full, even when completely empty. Now it reads 2/3 full. Something is working!

I am going to try to check the owners manual to see if there is a second valve. However, it appears only one black water and gray water valve on driver side, just behind the cab of the vehicle.
From the outside under your MH where the bathroom is located if there is a second valve odds are you will find it in this location!

We have the 28h Freedom Elite, same as 28z Thor. There is an additional black tank valve underneath the entry door, to the left. You must open both valves to empty the black tank. Make sure the gray water valve is closed to avoid the black tank backing up in your shower or sink. Also, the bathroom sink empties into the black tank -- something to be aware of if your black tank seems to fill up fast.

Yes, I quickly realized that when I was unaware about the second valve and tried running water in the bathroom sink.

So, when is the second valve, the one by the door, closed? Is it during storage or travel? It appears that when closed, nothing can get into the actual black tank.

28h or z valves

If you keep the 2nd valve near the coach door open, the toilet drains toward the main valve. In my experience, if the 2nd valve remains closed, the toilet bowl will fill to the neck after a couple days of use. We normally keep the valve closed for the first two days to allow the tank chemicals to do their job.

Our trips are usually 5 nights, with 2 adults. You will need to adjust for number of people and length of stay. Please private message me if you need additional information.
