Door strut bracket

I need help with the bracket for the door strut. The wind caught the door and the bottom screws came out of the door.
The 2 top screws go into the metal trim and seem to be secure, however, the 2 bottom screws go into the outer shell of the hollow door, and not much to screw onto. I was thinking of using slightly bigger screws but that seemed to be a temporary measure. There is also a gap between the bracket and the door at the bottom which I do not think is helping.

Is there room for you to get one of those expanding plugs into the holes, and use that as an anchor for the screws?

I put an expanding plug in but because the wall skin is so thin the plug turns with the screw.

How about epoxying it into place? It only has to hold until the plug mushrooms out...

This is really unusual - did it come from the factory like that? It looks more like a DIY addition. I would take the whole thing out and seal the holes with epoxy. Then install a proper strut on the inside of the door where it belongs.

A couple of stainless steel bolts all the way thru the door with ss washers between the bracket and door, ss washers and bolts on the outside (would look better).
I would replace all the other bolts with stainless steel.

Thank you. Sounds like a good idea.

Not sure if it came like this or added by previous owner.

A few years ago we had a similar setup from a sob manufacture.
A 40mph gust ripped the door out of my hand AND bent the bracket enough so that the door wouldn't close. Major effort bending it back.

Also for future windy days try to put a chain with a spring on the door so it won't fly open without something to absorb the force of the door hitting the end of the strut. Bob Trice

Great idea. I have one of those on the screen door at my house.
