Driving with one cylinder down

So long story short, finally getting answers to my engine problems that I posted about awhile back. First off, found out I had a cracked exhaust manifold. My mechanic replaced that this morning, but was still showing a misfire in cyl 4. Checked compression, almost none there. Some more inspection revealed what you see in the pic. At this point he is unsure what shape the valve is in, or the cylinder, and is suspecting it may be cheaper just to go with a rebuilt engine vs pulling the head, etc. He is going to do some research, and call me back. Bad thing is, no matter which way I go, he is booked until at least August for any big jobs.

My question is, how safe is it to drive with one cylinder down? We have a couple trips scheduled in June that are less than two hours away that I really hate to miss. I did ask him, and he said unofficially, he did not see much of a problem, but could not officially tell me it would be safe.

Don't do it. You can make your problems much worse.

I agree...
That thing will NOT heal itself, and will only get worse...

...until it leaves you by the roadside.

I would not drive an engine with valve trouble that causes a lack of compression. Sure, you can unplug the injector and softly drive it to a mechanic, but that is as far as I would go.

So where's the rest of the parts? Did he leave them out?

If the valve drops you will be stuck by the side of the road waiting on a tow.
Are you feeling lucky?

Looks like the rocker arm is missing.

Did the mech remove it? Was other stuff messed up? Maybe you can get some other mech to take a look at it and fix it that is not so busy. i.e. second opinion.
Others are correct, don't drive it more than you have to. In fact Ford has a free towing.
Forgot to mention that is a less than $10 part.

I'd find a new mechanic. Sounds like he's trying to sell you a new engine.

It is. V10s have been around a lot longer than that.

If you run it until it blows the rebuilt May cost more because the used core may be worthless and parts needed for the new engine may get damaged.

He should be able to look at the valve head with a bore scope. If it looks ok it should be ok to put it back together.

I also agree with this, if it's a broken rocker and no other damage.

Worked with Ford for 26 years and owned a Ford dealership. No way would I drive that. Too many things can happen and create even more, expensive issues.

Thanks for the input guys. I am not sure about the rocker cover, but I believe he mentioned that it was damaged. I picked up the RV today, and with the new manifold, it runs like it always did, so I suspect this issue was here all along, I just did not notice it. I did talk to him a bit more, and he isn't sure on the new engine, and is going to see about repairing what is there.

I did not think about the valve dropping, that sounds like a bad time for sure.

Please keep us posted. Curious to outcome.

I am very familiar with GM stuff and build my own engines for drag car. Few weeks ago I broke a polylock on a 350 during burnout at 6500 RPM. Started running on 7 cylinders and made 3 passes with car slow. Found issue with compression tester, 60 PSI instead of 220. Intake valve not opening. Had to pull intake as lifter was shot out of bore. Put everytthing back and replaced one rocker stud and car normal again.

Broken rockers not unusual on early gen small blocks. Never seen valve train open on v10 ford. I hope everything works out well for you.
