Electric Impact wrench

I’m trying to find an electric impact wrench (1/2” drive) that can take the lug nuts off my motor home. I bought a Porter Cable corded version that “says” it has 450 ft lbs of torque & 2700 impacts per minute. It will not budge them. My lugs are 145 ft lbs (just had a tire fixed yesterday & he used a torque wrench) Does anyone have one that works?

You'll be surprised of the good outcome and massive torque.

My sad 1/2", two generation old 18v ryobi takes mine off.

(also consider a torque multiplier just in case some ham fisted newb gets on those lugs)

Did the tire installer use the torque wrench for the final 1/2 turn or so or did he tighten them with his impact wrench and then checked the torque with the torque wrench, which is what they often do. In that case I would back the lug nuts off with a 1/2" or 3/4" breaker bar and then see what the impact wrench will do.

I can get the lug nuts off fairly easily with a 1/2" breaker bar on my Axis with 16" wheels and a torque spec of 140 ft lbs. I bet your Porter Cable impact wrench can too if they aren't too tight.

I have the Dewalt and it works great

As Duck noted the torque multiplier is a very handy tool and I keep one in the box as well

Normally I don't ever plan on taking a tire off the Tuscany, leave that to the professionals

Me either.
I just refuse to be without back-up.
I don't want anything to do with a blowout being changed, but I'm sure ready if it's the last resort or tow-truck guy shows up with dead impact batteries.

One is none.
The call I make to the tow company is that 'one'.

Make sure your insurance includes roadside assist and keep your fridge full of beer. Unless you're traveling the most remote areas of the country...then pack a cooler of beer also.

That's the one I have but first generation.
I was so surprised when it pulled off my lug nuts.

The reason I pulled a wheel was for practice at home(highly suggested)
And
The aftermarket Amazon wheel that won't fit on the front of an e450 was mounted on the outside rear.
I now have a factory wheel as my spare.
It will fit anywhere,

I pulled the wheels off our 2nd southwind for new tires. The nuts (spec was 450ftlbs) would not budge with my 1/2" air impact. Would not budge with a 3' breaker bar, a 4' steel pipe attached and 170LB me jumping on the end. I finally purchased a 1" air wrench to get them off. I don't know what gorilla used to put them on, but that was ridiculous.

450 Ft lbs is an amazing amount of torque. I'm not surprised you weren't able to move them with the breaker bar et al.

How did you torque them back on to 450 ft lbs?

170 lbs at the end of 5 feet of lever (consider 1 foot overlap) is almost double the 450 ft-lbs of required torque, not to mention the dynamic torque applied by "bouncing" on the end.

My 3/4 torque wrench goes to 600 ft lbs

It fits in a 48 inch tool cabinet

Preferably where it stays nowadays

Two things, anything above 100 ' #s really measn 3/4 drive. Some 1/2 drive will do it, must won't - especially electric. Also, your better off to use a multiplier to REMOVE and a torque wrench (or long bar that you calibrate with your strngth to tighten) to TIGHTEN the lug. Once that lug has been on a while, it will require more than the tightening torque to break it loose.

I have one of these (multiplier) on hand "just in case". And a long bar and breaker bar that fits the socket. I will likely use my roadside for a tire, but it helps knowing your not 100% dependent on them.

I’ve decided on a Milwaukee 18 volt cordless impact. It’s rated at 1000 ft lbs torque and 1400 lbs nut busting torque. We had a flat last summer in West Yellowstone and Good Sam roadside said unless I was blocking the road, call back tomorrow and we’ll send someone (it was a Sunday) I’m not going through that again so I got a 12 ton hydraulic/air jack and all I need is a impact wrench.

My Dewalt breaks 450 pounds easily so i think the newer higher torque tools will work

Almost no one carries a 22.5 spare so my wrench is a backup for roadside service

It has been over 30 years since i have had a tire issue which was on a heavy 5th wheel

Radials tend to perform well if inflated properly

I say go with the brand you have at home unless the impact is useless, then just buy a good one like you did and you can always buy more tools. Did you get the Harbor Freight air-hydraulic jack? I purchased that when I had my Jayco motorhome and it wouldn't fit under the axle with a board under it so it wouldn't sink into the blacktop or on the side of the road. I had to return it

I did get the H/F jack. I tested the jack and it fits and jacks it up. (Sprinter 3500)
