First Oil Change at 4340 Miles
Glad I did not wait until the OEMs recommended first oil change.....the oil was black as tar..... new oil filter (filled new filter before replacement) and 6 quarts of 5W/30 Valvoline Synthetic Blend as specified in the Ford manual. Now to put some more miles on her!

High idle time or rich fuel mixture and on EFI should not be the latter
Some oils are darker also
Interesting

Is the unit brand new? Otherwise if the coach is a couple of years old and has sat each winter the oil can actually breakdown faster just sitting in the bottom of the oil pan.

Oil & filter change
I would run 10/30 w or 10/40 full synthetic Mobil one and change every 7000 miles. The oil in my 911 Porsche 2004 is 5/50 W believe it or not hundred percent synthetic Mobil - 1 I do live in a warm climate California

Yeah it could be a time thing as well. I try to change it every 12 months regardless of miles. But if I go a few months over Im not going to panic esp when I only avg (so far ) about 2000 miles a year.

I agree synthetic oil most likely last forever , it just gets dirty. You could run it through a 10 micro filter and have brand new oil. But don’t forget oil develops condensation from moisture in the gearbox, transmission and engine crank case, the white Goo ruins motors and transmissions not being used and that’s tough on the seals, bearings piston sleeves, shall I go on, you have to change it minimally 10,000 miles if not at least running the motor.

What oil comes from the factory? Is it a synthetic blend?

Synthetic blend Motorcraft. Oil gets dirty looking from the carbon particles held in suspension by the detergent packager in the oil. While the engine oil does not wear-out, the additive packages are sacrificial and temperature sensitive. The Triton's cylinders are plateau honed at the Windsor factory, Ford states it will take approximately 20,000 miles for the engine to fully "wear-in" depending on engine load. During that period expect some blow-by and oil consumption of one pint per 7,500 miles (normal service for the F-53 chassis).

Good info. I just passed 3000 miles, and we're about to leave on a 3000 mile trip. I thought about changing the oil before we leave. It's 2018 chassis, so it sat around over a year before we bought it. But I pulled the dipstick, and the oil looks and smells fine. Guess I'll change it after the trip.

Jerry,
I went ahead and changed the oil yesterday. It would need it for sure once we return from our trip. And at 106° yesterday I don't see August here being any cooler, so I went ahead. Man what a PITA draining that oil. I'm glad I got that Fumoto valve for next time. I used a small transfer pump to get the oil in. That was a nice and clean method.
But I noticed my filler cap says 5W20. Thought that was odd.

Nothing odd at all about the 5/20 weight on your cap. Our 2016 had 5/30 on it. Just my opinion based on professional RV business advice, reading, owners' manual information, etc., ignore anyone who says to use different weights such as 10-40, 20-50, etc. Take comments about what was used at the factory also with some circumspect too. You cannot go wrong with using the suggested weight that is on the filler cap since that is what the engine was engineered to use for many reasons no matter the ambient temperature where you live.

It's odd because the owner's manual only mentions 5W30.
