Water heater question

My new coach has an Atwood 6 gallon tank type water heater with both gas and electric heat. It works fine but when on gas I’ve noticed something outside of my experience. It lights and burns fine but all the while the burner is going the igniter continues to spark. Not rapidly like when lighting the burner but just twice about every three seconds. Click, click pause and repeat. I see no purpose in it and am concerned it will burn out the igniter. On the other hand it is a distinctly different mode from start up so seems intentional. Is this a normal?

Thanks friends.

you may be hearing metal/aluminium expanding and not the igniter. Is it a steady click the whole time the burner is on or does it change.?

It’s a steady repeating cycle and there is a tiny LED that flashes with the spark so you can see it as well as hear it.

Unless Atwood has changed their modus operandus it sounds like a bad control board (Atwood? with bad control boards? ). Call Atwood tomorrow with your model number and pose the question to them.

Yes, I think that’s the easy button. Thanks.

Just to close the loop....called the manufacturer today and a very nice tech assured me it’s a bad circuit board. We’re on a month long snowbird trip to Florida so having a mobile service come and replace it. Seems a waste to have to hire someone else do it but it’s warranty item and it seems I can’t be trusted to make the call. At least it’s an easy fix!
