I agree: clean the carb. Pay particular attention to the pilot and low speed jets. They are the smallest orifices, and most prone to clogging.

I have been cleaning carbs for many years: outboards, lawn mowers, my Honda generator, etc. I remove the carburetor, unscrew the bottom of the float chamber and remove the float and all orifices. Then drop them in a can of carburetor cleaner that you can buy from any auto parts store overnight.

The next morning, dry, squirt a bit of WD40 on the inside parts are reinstall. Works every time.

And even if you’re reluctant to clean or rebuild your carb you can replace it for about $50 from Amazon. Certainly a DYI job even if you’re not “handy. Actually you might do both. Get a replacement and if that works try rebuilding your original to see haw easy it is and to then have one for your spares kit.

Go online. Extreme Diesel has an additive for gasoline engines. This stuff is fantastic. The diesel additive is added once every 6000 miles then an EDT in a small squirt bottle. Had same problem in our boat generator. Check it out.

I hope you never have the trouble I've had with a onan 4000
I've had it repaired at Cummins dealer under warranty approximately 4 times. My share of the warranty alone i could have replaced it at least twice.
The warranty covers very little as you will find out.
We are full timers so it's not from setting and not being used. I installed many onan generator at a company I worked for and never had anything like it.

$1000 is the going rate at RV shops. These carbs gum up on enthonal gas, if not run every 2 weeks.. is really a big problem.. I bought one on Ebay for $55 and installed myself. 2 hexgon , I forget, 10, 11,12,13,14 mm bolts. Is tricky to put back in place... take pictures

I ran the generator much more than every 2 weeks.
We did a lot of boondocking the first 2 years.
We ran it several times a week.
It just was and is a lemon.
We bought a predator 3500 from harbor freight because we are totally not able to rely on the onan.
It's sad that you have to have a back up.
My other onans in my other motorhomes never had problems like that. I use the generator a lot. It never sets 2 weeks without use.

I have been unable to find any objective and independent scientific evidence that products like Sea-Bil really work. There is plenty of anecdotal evidence and manufacturers claims about what a terrific product it is. Can anyone produce any scientific evidence to support claims of efficacy? How does Sta-Bil work? This inquiring and skeptical mind wants to know. I've never used a gasoline stabilizer and have never had any problems with starting and running my MH, generator, lawn mower or outboard motor.

I use Stabil in my small engines and have for many years, prior to Paul Harvey pitching it, so that dates me

It has saved me much aggravation and time plus money

Especially important on seasonal equipment including generators

The active ingredient in Sta-Bil is a food grade anti-oxidant developed to keep mold from growing on bakery products. No one likes moldy cup cakes. Since wheat is a carbohydrate and gasoline is a hydrocarbon, the same yeast/bacteria family is responsible for the degradation.

Sta-Bil has no effect on the degradation of gasoline due to vaporization. The volatile components of gasoline are necessary in order to start a gasoline engine, as gasoline will only burn in its vapor form. Liquid gasoline will not burn. Over a period of time, gasoline not kept in a sealed container will loose some of its volatile components. Usually what is lost first is the higher octane rated hydrocarbons. What remains is the straight chain hydrocarbons like heptane which has an octane rating of zero.

@16ACE27 Thank you for the link to boatingmag.com. I have Googled many articles on this subject and they're mostly anecdotal and promotional in nature. The boatingmag.com article helps to explain Sta-Bil's role in preventing phase separation. The article notes that it does not deal with oxidation. It would be nice to get some objective scientific data on that subject. I have a degree in chemistry and I'm curios about how it prevents oxidation at the molecular level. It seems to me the most important thing one can do is to make sure the gas tank is full when put into storage, thereby minimizing contact with water vapor in the atmosphere. It's too bad gas tanks don't have drain cocks in the low point like they do on airplanes so one can check for contamination. Of course they would have to be designed to be safe and theft resistant.

@Beau388 Thank you for your input. Very interesting. One of the articles I referenced on Google said State-Bil is a glycol that forms a thin barrier on the surface of the gasoline, thereby preventing contact with water vapor in the air. That doesn't explain Sta-Bil's claim that it's an antioxidant.

I hope other posts will provide more facts and insights regarding this issue.

Well I am just an AE but my younger brother is a CE. When he was the CEO of a well known German chemical company headquartered in Cincinnati, I ask him about Gold Eagle and their products. He the one that told me about the anti-oxidant as his company sold it to Gold Eagle. His company is big into UV stabilizers for plastics and paints so anti-oxidants would be in the same line. As for the idea you can lower the Reid vapor pressure without physically changing the hydrocarbon mix in gasoline (Summer vs the Winter blend) is foreign to me. I am also a believer in 303 Aerospace Protectant another Gold Eagle Brand

Here a a few thoughts that come to mind.

Warm gasoline can hold more water in solution than cold gasoline. Therefore, phase separation would be more common in colder climes.

As a general rule warm molecules are more active than cold molecules. Therefore, the potential for oxidation and degradation is greater in warmer climes.

I have never had a problem with fuel degradation and that could be because I live in the San Francisco Bay Area which has very mild weather. I never have to winterize my MH.
