Girard GSHW2 issue

Installed the Girard tankless water heater two years ago. Have had no issues at all. Camper is parked and doesn’t travel. Stays in place year round. Added a 100lb vertical propane tank and water heater started only heating 15-30 seconds, then only puts out 80 degree water. Switched back to the 40lb tank and heater is operating normally. What do I not know about propane pressures between 40 and 100lb tanks? 100lb tank is 75-80% full. Thanks for any insight. Was just looking for less tank refills, as my teen aged daughter is living in the camper this summer.

Welcome to the forum!
Are you using the same regulator to control the flow of gas?

Is the 40lbs tank also vertical or is it horizontal?

Propane Pressure Regulators are designed for either horizontal or vertical installation so they may not be interchangeable. It has to do with the vent valve orientation.

Not sure if that is your problem or not but worth looking at. The vent should always be pointed down.

I replied a little too fast..... you can mix regulator types but you do have to make sure the vent points in the right direction. The vent should be pointed down if moving a horizontal regulator to a vertical style tank. If the vent is pointed up, water and debris can get into the regulator and cause issues.

Not sure if it is his problem but worth some investigation....

Yes, both the 40 and 100 are vertical tanks

Girard GSHW2 issue

Is it possible the 100lb tank was over-filled and you are getting liquid propane into the regulator?

Have you tried opening the bleeder valve to see if you are getting liquid out of it?

I have not tried that. We’re in the process of moving. The 100lb tank was connected to my home generator. Genny worked fine on that tank, but I will give the bleed screw a turn when I’m back at the camper this weekend.
