RV Tires: 6yr Rule

Came across this article abt “Preventing Tire Blowouts”

https://rvlife.com/tire-blowouts-in-rvs/

Here are the 5 points:
1) Proper inflation
2) Do not overload
3) Right tires for the job
4) Prevent Dry-Tire rot
5) Replace tires that are 6yrs old

Regarding #5...it’s really a shame that I must replace 6 perfectly good looking, lots of tread tires.

That is, Ford chassis has 2016 dated tires (even though Thor build date is 2017).
So I’m now beginning the hunt for 225-75R-16 C rated 3,195# tires.

We’ve discussed this topic in the past, lots of threads on it.

Wondering if Forum members are practicing the 6yr tire replacement rule?

As much as it stinks to throw away a perfectly good-looking set of tires:
there's a difference between "good-looking", and "good".
Glad to see that you know that difference: happy shopping!

My tires are 6 years old. I'm currently replacing the front tires. Next year I'll probably do the drive tires.

Not sure that rule is necessary on a motorhome chassis, but is true for tires on towable RVs. You don't swap them on your car or pickup truck every 6 years, but wait til tread wear is low, should be the same on your motorhome provided you've done #'s 1-4.
Typically ST tires for towables are built differently than the LT or commercial type titres found on motorhomes & typically age out long before they wear out.

Well this is what my tires looked like after only 5 years:

I wouldn't go with any hard and fast time rule. I would go more with simply inspecting your tires on a regular basis. It doesn't take long to walk around the coach and look at the tires.

Only a tire engineer can answer the question, as he/she has access to all the info. Personally I see the 5 to 8 year change-out date depending on tire type and manufacture. I do know that the rubber compounds used in tires do harden with age and heat cycles, so I assume time change is a average of suspected use. Having has three rear tire failures of the past 30 years on different RVs, I adhere to changing out the steer tire at 5 years and the rears at 8 years. If you have a rear fail, all you may is have is a thousand dollars of body damage. A side wall failure on a steer tire is something I never want to think about.

I might mention that all tires basically loose most of the ability to pump water off the pavement when the tread depth reaches about 4/32". That is important as when the tire can't pump water off the pavement, the tire losses contact with the pavement and hydroplanes. That is exciting in a car and usually catastrophic in a RV.

Best thing you can do for your tires is get some covers and keep them out of direct sunlight, especially during long periods of non use like storage. UV eats the sidewalls long before tread starts to go on most RV's.

Call Petes road service. They have 9 location in so cal. They will buy your old tires, retread them then send them down south.

I dont know how they're prices are on new tires but I'll be checking next year when I change mine out

Ozone is worse than UV on tires. Anyone that has lived in a high ozone area can attest to the windshield wiper blades turn to goo in 6 months. The same thing happens to tires but somewhat slower.

I replace my motorhome tires in the spring after they turn 5 and request tires no more than 3 months old. It may be a year earlier than really necessary but I like fresh tires on my coach. I typically get about $150 trade-in credit. I’ll let them go to 6 or 7 years on my car because I have a spare in my car and a blowout is less frightful.

I'm not sure a wordseller, selling an rv story this week and a glutenfree dog food blurb at Fifty cents a word the next week is a good source to decide when to change tires.

The article is page filller for empty columns and is advertiser based.

I have a 2016 Vegas 24.1 and will be replacing the tires in the next few weeks because of cracking on the side walls...I noticed you will be looking for some 225-75R-16 C rated tires...The tires on our coach are 225-75R-16 E rated tires....E rating is a stronger side wall tire....

Was getting my daughter’s car inspected last month. In the next bay was a distraught young man. His car was getting a rejection sticker because his 3 year old Michelin tires were so cracked on the sidewalls the inspection station deemed them unsafe. The cracking was on the inner sidewalls and not visible unless the car was on a lift.

My coach is stored indoors. It is not climate controlled but free of sunlight, water, dirt, snow or ice.

I have it registered in PA so it has to get an annual state inspection. If the tires are looking good all the way around and they pass inspection at 6 years, I may keep them another year but I doubt I would go past 7 years.

It would also depend on whether I was doing any long haul trips at the 6 year mark or just doing short trips. If we were doing any long haul trips, I would likely replace them for peace of mind even if they passed inspection.

Hey, some sprays are bad for tires and very few are recommended by the tire manufacturer because ingredients in the tire dressing will degrade the rubber.

Have you checked with the tire manufacturer to see what they recommend?

Mine were dated March of 2015. Started to show very small cracks at edge of tread blocks. Got new in Late Dec. Put on the Nexxan with higher capacity. Just got back from another NC trip, all good.

Like anyone else, hated to replace tires with that much tread but 1st sign of dry rot or stress crack is time to replace. Was 36k miles, looked like tread good for another40k.

Brought old ones home and gave to buddy who will use on trailer.
