Most quality multimeters are self explanatory by looking at the dial or selections. But then they do cost a dollar or two more but last a long time. I have Han mine for about 40 years and it is still accurate.

Nothing to be sorry about. Most have the same kind of dial but labeled so that a person knows what they are measuring.

I think what he means is that higher end ones do a lot of the settings automatically. I have an old radio shack one that has 3 settings ac, dc and ohm. It figures out the rest.

Mine has three sections DC on left, AC on right, Ohms on bottom. The DC and AC sections have settings for different voltage or amperage readings. I also have a sliding switch to indicate whether I am reading resistance or checking continuity. If checking continuity there is an audible alarm if continuity is confirmed. This is great when working in tight spaces where eyeballing a meter is hard.
The link in the previous post was supposed to be a graphic of multimeter symbols.

The cheap multimeters have those as well (Like the OP's $10 one or the used to be free Harbor Freight one), but self-explanatory only helps people who are already familiar with and know how to use a multimeter.

You might try adding the model number in a YouTube search. I did that and it was nice to see the explanations on the unit I ordered. Watch a couple, as the quality varies.

The question brings back lots of great memories of teaching adult ed and basic understanding of how to use a multimeters. Suffice it to say that since electricity is not truly a tangible item and it must always be respected, having a good multimeter and understanding what it is telling you will allow you to troubleshoot many electrical items and may save you some cash down the road. I share to following basic information: First, have an idea what result you expect to find when you begin testing. (what voltage, resistance, amperage, continuity or open, is the item isolated or is there back-feeding, etc). Second, make sure you are not checking voltage on the resistance scale (ohms), you my blow an internal fuse and make that function unusable until the fuse is replaced. Third, is to always start your voltage measurements by starting on the highest setting and work your way down. Make sure you are measuring either direct DC or alternating current AC and are on the correct setting or our reading will be faulty and incorrect. Finally, the most important rule to remember is that EVERY tester has a maximum (safe) voltage or current rating. Never exceed that rating when making tests.
