HepVo Waterless RV Valve
Has anyone tried using the Hepvo waterless waste valve? I watched a video, through FMCA, today where they installed one of these on the galley sink and removed the factory installed P trap. The installation opened up quite a bit of area under the cabinet that was previously occupied by drain piping and a P trap.
Hepvo Waterless Valve is the website for the product.
is the link for a you tube video. The Hepvo website also has videos.

This is a real popular item that many owners of Casita travel trailers installed in lieu of p-traps.

You have one installed in your shower. Sits just above the access panel.

Chip,
Based on your reply I checked my waste water diagram and you are correct. For my Challenger item 47 on the diagram is listed as HEPVO Valve w/elbow.
I guess the question should be modified to Has anyone tried one on the kitchen or lavatory sink?

All,
I checked the cost of the HepVo on line, only $21.00+/- a bit one at a time...heaven only knows what you can get this down to in a large bulk order. So not that much cost - why not use them through out the RV unless there is some unknown drawback.

The other thing I now realize, from looking at the waste water diagram, is that I wasted a cup of antifreeze during winterization thinking it would remain in the shower P trap. I can now remove that step from my winterization checklist.

Doc -- I looked at our waste diagrams and they show all p-traps for us. No Hepvo valves.

They seem like a more efficient P trap substitute, that uses less space and is not expensive. They should be using these as OEM items. Is there some downside to this product I'm not seeing?
I wonder if my ACE shower drain has one....

I first heard about these yesterday when I got my digital edition of Family Motor Coaching. Since then I have done some checking and I only see positives with no negative implications mentioned. I did read an article by the "RV Doctor" where he mentions them becoming OEM standard features for showers because it eliminates the box a shower normally has to ride on, allows the shower drain to be run outside the coach and eliminates the need for the shower skylight because the additional height is no longer required.
I would be interested in knowing if they are being considered for home construction or if this is an RV only thing. That could provide an indication of any negative implications. Just answered my own question. They can be used in residential and industrial application if the building code allows their use under the alternate materials list. Apparently they have been in use in the UK since 1997.

Ed,
Thanks for the info on the Vegas 24.1's. Nice to know if (when) plumbing repairs become needed down the road.

Hepos are factory-installed quite often under the shower. I would NOT replace a p-trap with one. Maintenance problem. Does not take much to get something from a kitchen sink to get stuck in that. You'll soon find out just how bad gray water can smell. Keep it simple stupid is my motto. Don't reinvent the wheel.

I understand a hesitation if I am thoroughly incapable.
If I had no immediately innovatable skills I wouldn't install one.
The install may require some cutting and measuring and adapters and glue and innovative thought and application.
If you're comfortable with easy projects going bad, do this modification.
Otherwise rethink HEARTILY before you tear out that p trap and start cutting.
If something does clog this thing, removing to clean it out would be absolutely painless and far better than snaking a damnable plastic p trap. That's a nice advantage beyond the space savings.
I'll put them in if I have another mod/reason to be under the sink.
Saved it on the Amazon list.
Thanks to the op.

Do not use a snake or a plunger with the Hepvo. The snake will tear up the rubber membrane & the plunger can invert the membrane blocking the drain.

Unlike residential plumbing RVs typically have very short pipe runs to the tanks so chemical de-cloggers shouldn't be needed, a bit of air or water pressure into the drain should move any clog to the tank.
I personally wouldn't want chemical de-cloggers in the tanks to possibly damage valve seals.
