Here we go again.... my next RV will not be Thor

I'm sure those that really support Thor and those that either own stock or work for the company that participate in this forum will jump all over me but I've had enough.

My last post discussed my upholstry falling apart after 4 years and now, do to a porch light not being sealed.properly, I've had to tear out my microwave cabinet and replace the wood due to hidden water damage. There was mold and mushrooms growing on the wet and rotted wood and even an ant colony found a nice refuge. My countertop also under the microwave got wet and swelled and will never be the same. This is in addition to 2 other windows that constantly leak and have swelled the wood in the walls under them. I am forced to keep a small cup pinned up against the window to catch the dripping water each time it rains It's as if the guy who did the sealing/caulking at Thor was either drunk, high on drugs or just didn't give a crap about doing a decent job.

When I removed the porch light, there was a 1 inch oversized hole that was made to allow for two small 14 gauge wires to enter the RV, which created a huge gap for rain water to pour through. There was no foam insulation or anything to help seal the hole from water intrusion or just outside temperatures. Inspection of the seal around the porch light showed huge gaps in the seal which of course I had to reseal.

This will be my last Thor RV and would not recommend Thor units to anyone contemplating purchasing an RV. This is beyond ridiculous..

Sorry to hear that you;'ve had such a time with your RV.
But do you think that the other RV manufacturers are any better at this?

I've had two other RV and you're right, they all have issues but this one has been the worst.

Which brands do you think are on your radar right now?

It's just a shame that the RV industry is this way. I suspect it could even be worse short-term because of the increased demand and the hiring of more unskilled labor to do this type of work.

Anytime I do a repair or an upgrade I think about the best way to do the job. How can it be done right the first time? How to prevent future failure? How to make it easier to use?

Unfortunately the guys building these rigs don't think or work that way. They just want to do the job any way they can to get it done... as fast as they can... so they can collect their paycheck. Then top it off with the manufacturers not taking responsibility to provide oversight to build a quality product in the first place.

You can't tell me that they would not reduce warranty claim costs enough to offset building coaches slower i.e. more carefully and having QC Managers checking each step in the process and approving the workmanship before moving onto the next phase of the assembly.

Just adding up all of the warranty costs for my last two coaches and then multiplying that as an average for all new coaches, the numbers would boggle the mind.

I feel your pain.... but the old adage applies here..... if you want something done right, you have to do it yourself.

I've decided my current coach meets our needs and we do like it very much. I will get as much as I can fixed by the Thor Factory Service Center under warranty. That's the bets chance to get repairs done properly. Then I will continue to fix things myself better than they were from the factory. If I can't do the repairs, I will find a very reputable RV Repair & Restoration business to do them properly. In the end it will be less expensive than spending money on other new and more expensive coaches and continuing to chase problems with those coaches.

I'm glad you posted this as I have the same model coach and have found the countertop behind the stove to be wet sometimes inexplicably. Guess what I'm looking at today?

I feel your pain and disgust at the building practices, lack of quality control and attention to detail in building these RVs, but my last TT, a 2014 Forest River, and my previous two TTs, both Fleetwood products, all suffered from the same poor building and quality control practices.

Inspect and fix the common issues as soon as you can so you have a quality RV and can enjoy it with fewer breakdown interruptions. I look at reworking the factory screwups as just another mod to make the RV more useful to me.

You're absolutely right 16ACE27. I have a feeling you may find exactly what I did.. remove the four screws for the microwave and you can slide her right out and you'll see what's going on.

Well I just pulled my microwave and no signs of water intrusion there or in the hole to the light, just your standard collection of dry sawdust, wood chips and Styrofoam bits.

But now I see how easy it will be to install a 12 VDC LED flood light with motion sensor.

There never seemed to be any rhyme or reason to it, and it was just wet, not a puddle. DW never pays attention to splash when washing her hands or dishes so I just assumed it was rolling to that corner from the sink which, may indeed, be the source. I'll just continue to evaluate it when I see it.

Bought my first RV in the early 60's and quickly learned to fix and repair plus constantly upgrading

After several more all different manufacturers my RV tech skill set was improving as none were without problems

Decided to get higher on the food chain so purchased a Yellowstone 5th wheel with every available option

Less issues but still some so the next was a Landmark which came standard with most options, this was prior to Thor purchasing Heartland

After a year of work and several thousand dollars plus a few trips back to the dealer most bugs fixed. This was about a 100k camper

Then decided to go with a DP instead of upgrading the Diesel pickup and 5th wheel

Ordered the 2016 Tuscany which come with all options rather than adding on like many manufacturers

The issues with it have been less than any other RV but still several

Most of which were either intentionally done by techs or very poor training and skill sets

Luckily all the major components have been flawless with a couple exceptions and the coach is constructed well over all

The trips to non Thor shops for repairs such as an Aquahot coil found us in good company and usually the only Thor in the DP lineup

Something like a water leak can be huge in an RV or in a house

I'm pretty sure the seating problem was explained to you as being worldwide and having absolutuely nothing to do with Thor.

I've posted before about my home sofa going bad from the same fabric mill. It wasn't only an rv problem.

I, personally, wouldn't let a long past poorly sealed hole keep me from buying the Floorplan I liked best if that Floorplan was a Thor product.

With as many posts as you have and as much reading as you've done here you must somehow have absorbed the industry standards as being... Well... Standard.

You won't escape it short of a Newell.

Good luck on the sale.
Do not fail to disclose the mold problem or be set to have your hat handed to you in the lawsuit from the buyer. You've posted the mold here. That's proof of maliciousness if you don't disclose.
