If you have a gas Onan I think the recommended is 15w40. 1.6 qt, no filter. It’s an easy job. Don’t forget to clean the spark arrester as recommended too.

I’m using 30w in California climate

“Onan 4000 Generator Oil Type
The type of oil you should use depends a lot on the outside temperature in the area you are running it in. For those areas that are 32 degrees F and higher, you can get away with using a 30W oil. For lower temperatures, you can drop to a 15W40, a 10W30 or 10W40 and for extremely low temperatures, you should use a 5W30.”

Yes, but I went to south Texas last month expecting temps in the 60s and 70s. Instead, I found myself without power and needing to cold start the generator at 4:00AM with an outside temp of 14 degrees. It fired right up - thankfully - and ran for many hours over the next several days. Why not simply cover your bets and use the recommended multi weight oil in the first place?
