House Battery Cables

I am replacing my 2 Harris Batteries in my Miramar with 4 new Duracell batteries. I know how to wire them (series/parallel) but I question what size cable to use. I am leaning toward 6" - 2/0 connector cables to wire the 2 together in series and then the same size in 12" length to connect the pair in parallel. From what I understand this may be bigger wire than necessary but bigger is better, right...and it won't hurt anything. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks.

The only heavy draw from the batteries is the inverter. Since you have a 1,800 watt inverter, the max draw would surge of 3,600 watts divided by 11.0 volts would be 328 amps. That puts you at 3/0 wire. More conservative would be 1,800 watts divided by 11.0 volts or 163 amps which puts you at 2 ga. So all the wiring should be 2 ga. That assumes 12 volt batteries. If you choose to use 6 volt batteries, the the connections between the batteries need to be double the 12 volt size.

Just an FYI...I have a 2000 watt inverter so that may change your calculations some what. They are 6 volt batteries. Also, in researching wire there is a big difference in AWG 2 and 2/0. The 2/0 is much larger or am I just confused.

The n/0 notation is for wires larger than AWG 1...
0 (or aught)
00 or 2/0
000 or 3/0
0000 or 4/0...
So yes - 2/0 wire is 3 sizes larger than AWG 2.
The diameter of 2-gauge wire is 0.2576 inch. The diameter of 2/0-wire is 0.3648 inch.
