Generator Service Panel Replacement

Morning All,
I had been pretty diligent checking my Onan 4KY-26100R generator oil level every day when I thought I might use the generator. I probably failed to correctly re-install the service panel after I had checked the oil (but in my defense, there were some pretty hostile potholes between Branson, MO and Madison, MS; apologies to anyone who was following me and had to dodge the panel when it came loose).

Anyway, my attempts to purchase a replacement directly from Onan/Cummins has been frustrating as the part (Cummins Part #405-6384-01 Panel Assy-Service) is on back order and they do not know when it will be available.

Does anyone have a suggestion as to where I else I might try to source a replacement cover?

The manual tells me not to run the generator without the cover, but does anyone know what may go wrong if I do operator without the cover in place?

Thanks for your time,

Rxster08

I think I’ve heard that the panel is needed for proper cooling. It is an air cooled engine so it’s certainly possible that proper shrouding is necessary. I have to admit it doesn’t look to me like it would play any significant role in that but maybe. It’s probably safe to run it as I know there is a safety switch that will shut it down if it overheats but I’d sure keep trying to find a replacement.

Frustrating though. I recently lost my fridge access vent cover on the road. It had a complex, three color plus clear coat full body paint and cost me $600 to get a new one painted - and it’s not quite perfect match. I believe it was lost due to my negligence in fastening it. Argh!

I am following up with the seller to see if I can purchase the entire panel assembly including the locking hatches. i'll let you know if I'm successful.

I was hoping there might be an on-line RV salvage yard that might have miscellaneous items like the generator panel there.

I'm still waiting for the Ebay seller to reply, but if nothing else, we'll use the generator (sparingly) without the access panel until the back order is resolved.

My thanks again to everyone for their inputs.

with a little bit of tinkering, you can make a temp cover.

OldWeb, you are a fountain of info.
I'm on it and hope I can locate a panel from one of these salvage sites.
Also I'll be book marking that website for future use.

Thank YOU

Yer Welcome

Let us know how it works! You never know how old these sites are or if they are ever updated. All I do is simple WEB searches.
