Solar: Chassis Battery

I have a 2017 Thor Miramar 37.1.V10 6.8.

I have installed a solar panel, with a Renogy Controller. It keeps my coach batteries charged.

Does it also keep my chassis battery charged? The use store switch is in Storage mode.

Thanks

It should, You should have a BIRD or BIM that allows cross charging of the house and chassis batteries from your converter and alternator.. It doesn't know the difference between a converter charging or solar charging. It is connected on the battery side of the USE/STORE latching relay. But a BIRD uses 1+ amps to close the Trombetta relay. I don't know what the BIM constant draw is when connected.

When I first got mine I took a meter to check the batteries and all are being charged with the switch off

I would check the voltage on both sides of the Trombetta Solenoid

Should be exactly the same if you're charging both banks

My original Trombetta failed at about 6 months of age and the replacement is still going 5 years later

In the previous post, two pictures.

Thanks

Well, it looks like you are showing 13.9 volts at the coach batteries and 13.5 volts at the chassis batteries. The latter being over 12.7 indicates that it may be getting a charge from the coach system, but the voltages should be equal in that case.

The reason may just be meter inaccuracy, or it may be that you recently turned the chassis engine off and the 13.5 volts is the residual "surface charge" on the battery and the coach DC system is not charging. If so, wait an hour and check again. If the chassis voltage drops below 13 V and the coach stays at 13.9 then your BIRD or whatever is not working properly.

FWIW I have read lots of reports of failed BIRD solenoids and the test for one is noted above. It is fairly cheap and easy to replace it.

Pic on the right looks like you are

making 4.35 amps of solar. probably have 100 watt solar?

your batter bank is full at 100 percent

and you have tiny usage load of .14 amps

Thanks. Why do you think it dropped to 78% battery, nothing on, unit in storage, three days ago it was 100%?

Storage switch is in Storage mode?

Thanks

And the left image looks like it is a cloudy day and the solar panels are only putting out 0.67 amps.

In both cases I don't know what the bottom numbers mean.

Sounds like a question for Renogy. Not sur how a solar charge controller can even determine the battery bank capacity other than by measured voltage. How is the "load" measured. This is their diagram that I found:

My Renogy battery monitor uses a shunt to measure all current in/out of the battery and I set the full charge battery bank capacity in the monitor. So it always knows the true battery capacity status.

Do you have a Renogy bluetooth battery monitor in addition to the solar controller. Maybe that display is presenting data from both sources.
