Lippert leveling jacks motor went out

You asked for so you got it. It's been raining for days here. So, no outside jobs could be accomplished. I went out to my shop to do something and saw the motor laying on the bench so I decided to take it apart.

Just as I had suppositioned the motor brushes were the culprit.

As you can see in the pic of the brush assembly, two of the brushes are stuck. Two of the brushes are broken. One is obvious, the other in the 12:00 position is broke as well. You can see the crack if you look closely.


I had to remove the brush plate to free the stuck brushes. You can see the two broken brushes better in this pic. The two broken pieces are laying on a cloth just above the motor end bell.



The armature was cruded up and while cleaning I noticed the end of the armature was uneven which I contributed to the failure. I didn't to take a pic after cleaning and smoothing out but I had to sand it down.



The second problem I found contributing to the failure was the brush springs themselves.
I don't understand why three of these spring weakened. I saw no sign of excess heat anywhere on or in the motor.



Now to find the parts needed to put the motor back together. I'll need a new set of brushes and brush springs.

Thanks for the great post, pics and information. By any chance did you find any identifying names or numbers on any of the parts? I agree that the face of the armature being uneven was key to this failure. I'm hoping you can find suitable brushes and get the motor back up and running. Always nice to have a spare. if you find a source for the brushes please post the information. Thanks again for your post and I hope it stops raining for you. We've got Louisiana weather headed our way for the coming week, 85 to 92 temps and rain everyday. I have to line up some inside jobs to keep me busy. Lol.

I looked for parts ID on the brush plate and in other areas but no luck.
I haven't started looking for parts yet. Maybe tomorrow when businesses open back up after the weekend.

I got off my lazy behind and decided to look for a brush kit. It took me about 15 minutes to locate the kit.
The problem with the kit is it fits several other 12V DC motors and only 1/2 of the brush set is correct for my motor. I needed both brush sets on each side of the motor to be connected to a lug like the one in the left hand side of the picture below.

The kit is $13.50 and $3.75 shipping. I ordered two kits so that I would have the correct brushes for both sides of the motor.
The total delivered for both brush sets is $30.75. Still not bad comparing to a shop replacing the brushes.
Now, I'll have a spare motor for my Lippert hydraulic leveling jacks.

They should fit. Of the applicable listed fitments was the Lippert 12V DC motor P/N 414850.
I talked to Eurton Electric before ordering and they confirmed fitment and that I would need two sets for my motor since the manufacture sells them as you saw in the pic I posted earlier. It's other motors that take the brushes with ring terminals. I assume there are more other motors that take the ring terminal brushes on one side.

For instance, this is the fitment chart for these brushes.

After returing from a trip from TN to several western states, I had my jacks extended in my driveway while doing some work. When I went to retract my jacks, they would not retract. After all the resets etc., I called LCI and they took me through some troubleshooting steps to determine that I had a motor failure (LCI techs were very helpful). After that, I found this thread which was very helpful. Neither of the local motor shops would repair the motor, but one gave me a contact for Western Motor Services which is the same company that "Jack and Diane" linked above. After calling them, I bought a replacement motor from them ($425 total). After receiving it, there were several obvious differences including: the body is about .5" shorter, the posts are located differently and are smaller, both end caps are shorter, there's no nut for manual operation but a screwdriver slot is provided. To shorten this story... I installed it and my system is now operational. I need to address the ring connectors on my cables, but other than that, it was a 2 bolt install. How long this slightly smaller motor will hold up, I don't know. Hopefully I won't be updating this post for several years.

I rebuilt my motor with the brush kits from Eurton Electric. The terminals were 1/4" studs instead of 5/16" I was able to use the existing isolators during installation.
Reassembled the motor and it woks fine. I will keep it as a spare.

Been following this thread and then this past weekend our leveler motor FAILED! Got the nerve up and removed it today... then got more nerve to take it apart after confirming no continuity across the two terminals.
I found mine full of oil(?), I assume oil leaking in from the hydraulic pump... it was thick and black (from the arcing and carbon?) and sludgy in places. So I washed all the parts, and saw the brushes were surprisingly good, maybe half-life left? Tomorrow I will take it to the storage and put it back together for the real test. :-)

My question is the link you provided above shows a set of brushes and neither have the ring terminals. Do you think the studs now shown are the proper size and two to one set?
Also Lippert has a new 'sealed coupling' for the motor... I wonder if it will fit my motor/setup (motor #414850). Will need to make a couple of calls tomorrow.

The brushes do not have ring terminals. The studs on the brushes in the link are 1/4" instead of the original 5/16". They worked out fine.
If I were you, I would contact Lippert since you have a leaking seal. I was able to reuse my old coupling. It looks like new.

Before I start digging into this myself, does the endbell(brush hood) require any special process to remove? Once the motor has been removed from the system does it simply pull away from the housing, or do you have to remove the center nut? TIA

No special process, just remember to mark both endbells so they go onto the main frame in the same position (not 180° out) and on their respective ends!
Once the wiring and bolts are removed, the motor slips out, there is a coupler as mentioned to connect it to the pump, it just slips off. This is where mine did not have a seal, allowing the leaking hyd. pump to seep into the motor.
To disassemble the ends, yes, that one nut has to come off... and I believe it is left-hand thread! (But don't quote me on that) Do not force it, it comes off easy.

Your correct the center nut is left-hand thread. I discovered 3 of the 4 brushes were hung, 1 spring was just short. I filed down some material on the brush holder just enough where the brushes would slide smoothly. did some cleanup on the armature, re-assembled, bench tested it. Re-installed it and up in the air I go. We'll see how long this last.
