After the new engine was put in the check engine light remained on until someone figured out that the O2 sensors were wired wrong.
They are now back to happy motoring with a new, er, motor.

Thanks for the update Jamie. In hindsight, he was probably bit by the cam follower/valve lifter issue that quickly spiraled into more damage. Hopefully he's good to go now.
