Coach Air Conditioner questions

Just bought a 2006 hurricane V-10 , first couple trips everything was good camping.

But it is getting hotter now and I had my coach in storage and though I would check out the roof top air conditioner, didn't have shore power, so I thought maybe with the generator running it would work, but it did not. Generator kept running but ac would not come.

Is this normal? Do you have to have shore power to run them?

When I am at home getting ready to go I run a extension cord to an adaptor to my 3O amp plug, but that is only 110 V. Would that work? Or do you have to have the whole 30 amps to run the AC.

The generator should run your AC no problem, no shore power needed. I have ran my AC with a 30a adapter, but I have also melted power cords this way as well, so I would recommend 30a service instead of using an adapter if running the AC.

First, if your shore power cord is 30A then it is 30A 110V and a 15amp garage outlet will run the A/C if nothing else is on, but it is likely that your converter is drawing some AC amps too so you will soon blow the 15A breaker. You have a better chance if your garage outlet is 20A.

Second, how does your coach switch from shore power to generator power. Newer coaches have an automatic transfer switch (ATS) and if yours has one, it is probably bad. If you do not have one, then the common way coaches are built to switch to generator power is to move the power cord to the generator input socket. This is located in a hatch towards the rear of the coach usually on the driver's side.
