storage - slide in or out ?

I have seen stored RV's and some of them had their slide out. I read a thread on here where somebody mentioned he had his slide out all winter long.

What is the correct way to do it ? in or out ?

In, unless you're living in it.

Others may disagree.

To me: it would fell like leaving the garage door up; while I took a Month-long trip out of State.

Slides in for me too. No real reason to leave them extended for storage.

I leave them in when not in use, with them out it makes it easier for unwanted critters to get in.

It doesn't take long to extend them for daytime visits, and it keeps you in touch with the mechanicals and their processes.

Qualifier: Up until this year

Normally I would leave the slides out and jacks down unless there was a forecast for nasty weather coming in. Even during times of storage we were going into the motorhome two to three times per week to do this or do that and running the slide that often presented undue wear and tear on components.

This year, since we are spending time in SC and not as much in and out of the motorhome I have the slides in and jacks up.

Never had an issue either way.

A world of caution, if the slides are out and you get freezing rain or a heavy snowfall be careful when the slides are retracted. the Additional weight cause the motor to strain when retracting and chunks of ice falling off slide toppers can causes scratches on paint or lumps on heads if not worse.

Always IN when not in use. Less area for potential damage and if a big wind comes up (see North Carolina) less chance of damaging the slide tracks.

If we leave the unit for a month or so not in use I use the manual slide jacks to hold it back. In case. But then caution preserves sanity.

I would think that leaving a slide out exposes the seals and other areas available to the critters to nest while you're away. At least while it's in, the design is to keep all the elements and critters out at all times. Just seems to make more sense. Then again, if I had all the answers people would think I was in politics!

I asked this last year and most said in. But i drive around here and about 50/50. We get snow and ice and I have seen ones that have roll up cover over slides have them torn. Some one must be advising them to do this. Might be dealers that want to see them back sooner.

Slide issue

I vote for in, unless you are using it often.
