We discovered that the coach battery was dead. Is that because we left it in "use" position and were not driving? Does the coach battery charged while plugged into shore battery?

The house batteries are charged by the converter/charger when plugged into SP or running the generator IF the USE/STORE switch is in USE. So leave it in USE unless not using the RV for more than a few days AND NOT plugged into SP.
Depending on which MH you have the house batteries may also be charged by the engine alternator. Almost all Class A MHs do and some Class C MHs do.
