New tires

I have a 2018 Thor Freedom Elite. I am getting new tires. The old tires are dated 2016. Should I replace the tires with LT tires or C tires?

Welcome to our campfire!
This question came up about a Month ago
I believe the general concensus was to use the "C's"

When I had a class c I always ran a load range e tire. Passenger care tires are not designed for the weight of a cutaway with a motorhome on its back so don't put load range c tires on your rig. Go with the LT in at least a load range e. Are the old tires worn out?

Go to discount tire and ask for either the highest weight rated tire that will fit or the best riding tire that will fit, then compromise.

Tires are such a personal choice it's hard to recommend.

I'll go with weight ratings higher than whatever I expect to load on them.
Other than that I'll go by discounts recommendation.

Ask a pro.
Most here won't buy two sets of rv tires for the same rv in a 15 year period, and most here won't own an rv for 15 years to buy that second set.

Why are you purchasing new tires? Date or miles?
Are you getting front two only or six?

I see you have a 23H (about 24' long). Do you have dual tires at the rear? If so, a regular LT tire with load range E would probably work fine. However, a C type (commercial) tire can give more peace of mind, especially if you drive a lot of miles. I have a 31E (32' long), so mine is a lot bigger and heavier, and the rear tires are near their load limit. I have had 2 rear tire blowouts with tires that were only a couple of years old. I plan to replace my rear tires with C type tires even though the tires I have are nearly new. We are planning to do a 4-week trip around the country next summer, and I don't want to risk another blowout. I'm not as worried about the front tires since my RV isn't that heavy at the front.

An LT225/75-16 tire 115/112 E range has a load rating of 2,680 lbs.
A 225/75-16C 121/120 tire has a load rating of 3,195 lbs (3,085 dual). So for the 4 rear tires this gives about an extra 2000 lbs of margin.

The question then is which C type tire to get?
The least expensive seems to be the Nexen Roadian CT8 at around $130 per tire.
Other options I've found:
Firestone Transforce CV $140

Goodyear Wrangle Fortitude HT C-type $241

Continental VanContact A/S $230
General Grabber $200
Michelin XPS rib?

Good analysis
Thanks for sharing

The question for me is when is the tire expiration date (vs miles)?
That is, for peace of mind, how many years is the magic number?

This question has variable answers depending on a lot of factors. You may be able to get some info at the below link.

Are your current tires showing signs they need to be replaced(cracked, badly worn...)? They are 5 years old but most agree that tires should last somewhere in the 7 year range.

Thanks for trying, but it doesn't help much in my decision.

My 2017 is actually a 3/2016 E450 chassis build date, so that means the tires are approaching 5 years.

I currently have just over 20,000 miles.

So...5 years and 20,000 miles.

The Michelin LTX LT225/75R16E tires are in beautiful shape, lots of tread parked under hard cover without sun damage. Also, when parked...Hydraulic Levelers are used to take weight off axels & keep tires in shape.

To purchase new tires today seems like overkill to me, but...

225/75R/16C
The least aggressive tread for most quiet ride:
- General Grabber (Load Range C) $183.99 on Tire Buyer
- Nexen Rodian (Load Range C) $130.79 on Amazon

New tires

I decide to get the Michelin Agilis Crossclimate 225/75R16 121R C8 BSW from Discount Tire. I pull a 20 ft. trailer with a farm tractor on it.

Please let us know how you like them; once you've logged some miles...

Post Tires

I went with the TOYO tires after reading a lot of reviews. I ordered 6 of the Open Country H/t ll LT225/75 R16 115S E1 BSW from Discount tire. A lot of the reviews say they have a foul smell for the first few miles. But are good tires.

I am quite certain that there is not a factory surge protector. But it’s a worthwhile addition. I have a Hughes autoformer with an onboard mounting kit and a Progressive onboard EMS. Important kit, in my opinion.

thanks, my power line is direct into the unit and being winterized did not wat to go under and look around. I do have the Hughes 30 amp EPO with low and over voltage shut off. It will go where I go. Thanks for getting back.

I wasn't sure because of the power being direct to the internal inverter and panel. Better safe than sorry.

Thanks again.

Also on the tires I have the LT 10 ply commercial rated. They are a great ride. I had originally purchased with the original 3 Michlins on the passenger side and the past owner had to replace the driver side (all 3) with Wranglers. It messed up the ride and it was obvious driving. I originally was going to just match the 2 fronts and leave the other four as they were on the rear axel but after thinking it over just went for the full replacement. So glad I did. It is all been repaid with a better ride and better control.

When I purchased my Class C it came with "E" classification tires. I think they are heavier duty. Class Cs' tires are relatively small compared to the weight of the vehicles so are heavily loaded. You need to have heavy duty tires and don't let them get too old. I blew two the same night once because they had dry rotted.

Paul

And keep in mind that the tires are not necessarily the same age as the unit. Check the manufacture date, which is embedded in the codes on the tire.

Actually all my tires were fine even though not matching. The newer of the 3 were only 1 year old and the other 3 were original.

I just wanted to be safe and get the ride better. By all new matching tires I got what I was hoping... all with a better ride and less sway.
