OIL CHANGE FOR V-10 AND ONAN 5500 gen

Can't seem to find requirements for type and weight of oil to use. I plan to do my own oil changes for both as long as it doesn't cancel the warranty. Ideas and info needed.

Engine - SAE 5W-30 semi-synthetic - 7 qt with filter

Onan - 10w-30 up to 80 F degrees - 2 qt
15W-40 if over 80 F degrees

i run 10w-40 in my v10 and in the gen set also, always found the 5-30 is to thin.and may go to 20-50w if i know i am going to drive in very hot weather

I would stick with what the oil weight on the oil filler cap of your v-10 calls for. Ours on the Axis calls for 5-30. I use Mobil 1 full synthetic and have been using K&N oil filters. The generator specs by Cummins/Onan call for 30 weight in climates under 100 degrees and 15-40 for those over. 15-40 full synthetic is getting harder to find but I ordered a case on Amazon by Royal Purple. There are many others that offer "blends". As far as going with heavier weights for your v-10 because you are driving into a "hotter" climate, I don't make decisions like I did 40 years ago because I believe engineering has made enough improvements that I stick with the recommended oil specs. Many of the oil weights we used in our cars 40-50 years ago aren't even on the shelves anymore and there are some on the shelf that we didn't even think about.

The filler cap and manual for my 2015 v10 call for 5w20. They may have changed it for later models. I use Mobil 1.

My 2017 Class C called for 5w30 in both the owners manual and on the filler cap. Interestingly my local Ford dealer suggested I was “mistaken” when I mentioned it and said they’d put 5w20 in regardless. I change it myself so I used the 5w30. On the other hand my 2017 Class A says to use 5w20. I expect there is a reason for the difference but I don’t know what it is. Both chassis were made in November 2016.

I use Ford 5w20 in the v10 and I think it is too thin,
15w40 in the genny because it was using oil with the stock oil

I also use 5W-20 in the V-10 engine and 15W-40 in the generator. I never have to start the generator in cold weather. I am skeptical about using 5W-20, but haven't gone to a higher viscosity oil. I suspect they want us to use low viscosity oil for better fuel mileage. As if that's going to make much difference.
