Onan 4000 fault code 4

Unable to start my Onan 4000. Plenty of gas. Cranks over fine. Everything appears ok. After I try starting it flashes fault code 4. When I try and get the secondary code nothing happens. Tried resetting fault code but nothing happens. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

4 is over-cranking: you cranked it for over 30 seconds without it starting. Are you priming it before you try starting it?

Thanks. Yes, I e done everything by the directions. I primed it for 30 seconds and it wouldn’t start. I did it several time with no luck. Thanks.

With respect, if you’ve over cranked it you haven’t followed the directions. Mine often doesn’t start right up. Typically I prime for about 10 or 15 seconds, pause, crank for about 15 seconds, pause for about another 15 seconds then crank again and it starts right up. Not to say that there isn’t something wrong with yours. But it’s a typical small engine and you can troubleshoot with typical techniques. Disconnect the fuel line and crank to see if the fuel pump is working. Remove the float bowl and check that it’s full. Check for spark at the plug. See if the plug is wet with fuel/flooded. That sort of thing. Good luck.

Thanks for the input. I’ve tried everything recommended but still doesn’t start. I’ve got a friend coming over this afternoon that’s familiar with this sort of issue but not specifically Onan. I’ll let you know of the results. . Thanks for your help

Also, define "plenty of gas". Most onboard generator pickups will not provide gas to the generator unless over 1/4 tank. Individual installations will vary - some higher, some lower. If you don't have at least a half a tank of gas you may be wasting troubleshooting time.
