outlaw ramp extension
Looking to build a couple extensions made from 1/4" diamond aluminum plate. I want to fasten a cleat to the floor of my extension/deck. Does anyone have any idea what sort of material is beneath the skin of the floor on the ramp? I'm hoping it's some sort of marine grade plywood, as I plan on fastening the cleat with 1-1/2" wood screws. Anybody have any ideas, or had any experience attaching anything to the inside of the ramp?

What are you looking to do with it?
(Besides the obvious... )
I used to just carry a couple of 42" short ramps, and some 2"x 6" blocks to put under the ramps rubber bumpers.
(And I rubber curb ramp; since I was loading a three-track vehicle)
It all stored under one of the jackknife sofas, and could easily be removed, if it wasn't going to be needed.

I made two ramp extensions with 3/16” aluminum diamond plate and used a couple gate hinges that have nylon inserts . Pulled the bumpers off the ramp and used their bolts to attach the hinges to it. Works great, they fold flat and the deck railings still fold down flat. Cheers

Hey Seagimp, great idea! Could you post a pic of the gate hinges?. I was gonna use piano hinge, but thought that might be a bit flimsy. I also thought about installing the diamond plate about a foot into the ramp, with 2 feet extending out. My idea was the same, for the ramp to fold up when not in use.

There’s a good write up of how our ramps are put together someplace. I think over at irv2 in the Outlaw mods thread.

Hey Kickstand, I went to the irv2 site and typed in your handle to look for your ramp post. Even typed in outlaw mods and ramps, but couldn't find anything.

It’s not from me, I just recall a discussion. The Outlaw Mods thread is long and unwieldy, and mostly about the Class A Outlaw, but there is some crossover- like with the deck. I believe the manufacturer is the same for both, so insights on construction should apply. Search for deck and ramp in that thread.

A pic would be great. In the meantime, I think I saw a photo on either this site or irv2 that showed a ramp that had two adjustable trailer jacks mounted on either side of the ramp, bolted through where the rubber bumpers are located. They are a minimum of about 6", which when combined with a ramp extension would probably do the trick. Got the rig in dry storage right now, so I guess I'll have the winter to dream up a way to attach my extensions. I think I'm leaning toward aluminum diamond plate attached with gate hinges.

I’ve had Race Ramps for last few years that I use for my C6 Corvette they work outstanding. At recent bought a 2019 Corvette ZR1 unluckily my original ramps were not low enough for the new corvette so I checked the Race Ramps web site and found that they have extensions for my original ramps picked up a set difficulty solved big products.

I don't know what you are going to be loading so not sure if what I did will work. I bought a tri-fold ramp from HF and then reinforced it to handle the weight of my motorcycles. I also made a set of (4) 12" legs out of 3/4" threaded rod and drilled out one bolt hole in each bumper on the door to accommodate them. I bolted a 3/4" threaded rod connector into each one from the inside with bolts that would only go half way into the threaded rod connector and this gives me plenty of thread to screw in the legs. I only put the legs in hand tight so I take them off after each use and store them in the compartment. the ramp I purchased from Harbor Freight is:
Haul-Master
1500 lb. Capacity Tri-Fold Aluminum Loading Ramp
The capacity is mis-leading in that any one of the three ramps can only handle 500lbs. I re-enforced each tread with a piece of 3/16" aluminum and pop riveted them on the underside and I also re-enforced each of the rails on the center ramp with solid aluminum square which a then inserted into the rails and also pop riveted in place. My bike iv over 850lbs. and I'm 250lbs. and it handles it just fine. I've attached a couple pics of the legs and if you want I can take some pics of what I did to the ramp.

We did that on our Dutchman toyhauler, but we went into metal and wood using self tapping screws. The diamond plate was put on a full length hinge so it would flip in when we would raise the door.when the ramp door is closed look to see if the metal frame around the door extends enough for clearance for mounting.

Hey vmachnig, I like the threaded rod idea. Cheaper than adjustable trailer stands. And Connieb, I would also like to install a flippable piece of diamond plate. What size continuous hinge did you use?

We used a 6 foot continuous hinge, we loaded to heavy Harleys or the golf cart

Would it be possible to post a pic of the hinge? All I can find is piano hinge, and that seems a little flimsy.
