Question about the 5500 Onan Gen

Tried running both AC units while Onan 5500 gen running but only one AC unit would operate although both were on and set to a temp lower then the room temp. Is this normal as I was under the impression that a 5500 gen could run both AC units simultaneously.

How many amps is your service? If 30 amp, you may be limited to one AC unit (along with any other power draws.) 50 amps should run both.

According to a power calculator, the 5500 watt gen has enough amps to run both AC's. I read in another forum to check the gen to make sure both breakers are on as one might have tripped. I will do that and provide an update.

You only have about 20 amps left over with the A/Cs running. Frig and converter take up most of the spare (both on L1). Turn on the microwave or the electric water heater and something will pop. You have 30 amps on L1 and 20 amps L2 usable. An EMS helps with this problem.

I just saw that you have a Challenger 37TB so you should have 50 amp power. The next thing to do is what you said - check the breakers on the generator. That has happened to us before when one leg of the power went out.

My ACE 32.1 has the Onan 5500 and I can run both A/C's at the same time. Try operating the one that didn't work just by itself. It may be a blown thermostat fuse.

It will run both, period. Check the thermostat button thingy sensor under one of your cabinets in the area of the a/c that doesn't run. You may have a bad sensor. Either way, sounds like the problem is in the power to the a/c...not a generator issue. Test incoming power to a/c unit. Do both of them work when connected to shore power?

Both units run on shore power just not on Gen power. Checked the two 30 Amp breakers on the gen and neither was tripped.

The breakers might be tripped but not appear to be. Physically turn breakers off and back on. Also check your “house” breakers, especially the AC, flip off and back on again. Will both AC’s run when plugged in to 50 amps? Is it only the front or the back that won’t run, if it is a specific AC you may want to check the connections at your transfer switch. Just a couple of things you may want to try. Things like this are very frustrating!!!

Reset all relative breakers, tested and both AC's now are able to run simultaneously with the gen running, no shore power. Thanks for all the feedback.
