Question re black/grey tank outlets

Hey all,

We have a 2016 Vegas 24.1. After removing the cap to the sewer outlet, you have to turn it down so you can attach the hose up from under the unit. Turning it downward is very difficult. I can do it, but my wife cannot. There are 4 bolts on the base of each pipe just before going into the final outlet. Does anyone know if these bolts can be loosened to make it easier to rotate this down and without causing it to leak?

Hope this makes sense … any thoughts are appreciated. Thanks

Yes, a bit tough to do. Personally, having previously owned the same rig, I would not loosen the bolts. I would try spraying some silicone spray and/or see if you can fit a small strap wrench around it for her so she can get some leverage.

Also make sure that the screws sticking out from the bottom of the sewer bay have some type of protection on their sharp points or have been changed out with bolts and nuts which is what I did. They will definitely make your hand look like a shark tried to rip off your hand.

Thanks … I have never had an issue with the sharp screws but have read about it. I will try some lubricant and will try that … cheers

A good heavy-duty pair of rubber gloves will help you to get a firm grip on it.

Can you just leave it in the "down" position?

I guess you could. However the downside is then you cannot screw down the cap disc that keep water, dust etc. out of the compartment.

Perhaps a roll of Duct-Tape could solve that part of the problem...

while we are on the drain systems can anyone point me in the right direction on why shower drains slow? This year is the first time we have been in RV for over a week at a time and our shower drains slow, like a vent pipe is plugged. I have used Drain-O twice with no change. All other drains are fine as is black tank drain. Thanks

I had the same problem on my 2013 Tuscany
Solution: took a thin screw driver, removed the drain cover and was shocked to see all the hair and soap scum,10 min later after removing the hair and crud, poured a cup of baking soda I
nto the drain, and a pot of HOTWATER, problem solved

This would be the best option.
WOULD NOT use Draino as the waste is dropping into a plastic tank with rubber seals on the valves that the drain cleaner is probably not doing them much good.
DO NOT use a sewer snake either in any of the drains.

Drain solution

I have a Thor Compass with the same Black/Gray tank system. I had difficulty too. Sprayed with silicone, but couldn’t tell any difference. I did buy a cap with a handle on it. This gave me more leverage to push it down and pull back up.

I have the 2018, 24.1, and from the time it was purchased the drain was pointing down. I assumed that that is the way it is supposed to be. I have tried to turn it, but found it impossible to move. Is there a chance that on the 2018 model the drain is supposed to point down all the time?

We have the 2018 24.1 Vegas. Ours rotates. It does take some muscle. Lubing with silicone spray may help.

Another option, you dont need to turn it down unless you plan on being hooked up to sewer for a period of time and want to close the compartment, for a quick dump just use it sideways..

nuts and bolts

You can loosen the bolts slightly. This connection has seals on both sides to prevent sewage from leaking. You will need two small wrenches. Start with the easiest to access. Wear gloves! At some point you may have to replace the gaskets in this valvee. It is a 15 minute job. Buy the gaskets. A dealer will charge you a bunch for a quick easy inexpensive repair. YouTube it for a DYS video.

79 bucks buys you a bayonet mount macerator.
No need to turn any pipe ever again. It stays static.
Use a Water Thief to change from one inch outlet to garden hose. 3/4" garden hose is much easier to wrangle than a slinky.

200 bucks more buys you electric valves for black and gray valves.
15 bucks gets you great quick connects for from macerator to hose.

Picture is a 2018 24.1 with a macerator. The orange thing in your upper left corner is the power switch. It's installed so I can't close the hatch unless the switch to the macerator is off. Power came from about 30 inches away at the fuse block.
A 25 garden hose, flush it with fresh water and screw the male to the female for storage, takes up very little room. Mine lives in the wheel of my spare tire.

Easy stuff.

I've always had issues with sewer hose connections, loosening, tightening, etc. Now that I have my Thor 35M with the same pivoting drain, I purchased a new Rhino Sewer Fitting wrench set. Haven't used them yet but should work.

Thanks! You were right on in my case! Since I am bald as a baby butt I know who created this problem...

We had the same problem with our chateau. When the tanks are empty, you can loosen the 4 bolts and reposition, then retighten. This is another poor design, but doing this works for me,as I almost have to stand on my head to empty the tanks.
