Shore power

Good afternoon, been a while since i have had any issues with our 2015 Thor Four Winds 35SK but this one has me baffled. We are living in RV while we build our dream house and ran into an issue a few weeks ago. While plugged into shore power, voltage dropped until RV pretty much shut down. Had electrician test 50 amp plug and all good. Could start generator and power RV but would not power up on shore power. Just changed ATS as that seemed the logical problem but still running into the same issue, no power on shore power but generator powers RV. I turn on inignition and start RV while plugged in and everything works, even both ACs. I am stumped. Any ideas?

Did the electrician check both legs after the ATS, leg 1 and 2?
Do you have an inline surge protector?
Reset you 100 amp flag circuit breaker.
Just my guesses so far.

My guess……

By starting the engine, you are suppling a charge to your coach batteries. Sounds like your converter died and in turn killed your coach batteries .

Yes. If everything works on generator, but not SP then there is a problem between the SP outlet and the power center in the RV. Could be:
SP receptacle
SP Cord
RV cord connector
ATS
Any connection in the line.

No magic "fix" here.

"New" does not equal good or even mean properly connected.

How do you know that if SP doesn't go through it to the power center?

You need to start over with your definitions and symptom description.

What is "power"? You have 2 different power systems in your RV:
120 VAC from SP and generator which powers AC loads like; Air Conditioners (A/Cs), microwave, plug in outlets, converter to charge the batteries and supply DC loads.
12 VDC supplied by either the house batteries or the converter if SP or the generator is running. DC loads include lights, control power for the thermostat, A/Cs, water heater and furnace, the furnace fan.

the house 12 VDC buss may also receive power from the engine alternator when the engine is running.

So in the OP you say "While plugged into shore power, voltage dropped until RV pretty much shut down." What voltage dropped and how was it measured? Did you have no AC or DC power? No lights?

Then you said " I turn on inignition and start RV while plugged in and everything works, even both ACs." So if you had no lights, no 12 VDC on the house DC buss the A/C would NOT work even if SP is available. So if that was the case then your converter was not working and supplying 12 VDC to the house DC buss and house batteries. When you started the engine, the alternator supplied that 12 VDC to the house DC buss and the lights and A/Cs could function.

You also said "no power on shore power but generator powers RV." How did you start the generator? Was it started when the engine was running? If so, it is just a matter of time before the house batteries die again and all power is lost and the generator stops running.

Generator running (started when RV is running because house batteries have drained, rv turned off once generator is running) everything works

Shore power only-nothing works

Shore power, rv running - everything works

Rv running (not hooked to shore power) - lights, fridge, etc works, NO AC

Hope this is a better explaination.

I think Post #4 nailed it. Your house batteries have drained because your converter is not working. Have you checked the converter breaker in the Power Center? Have you put a voltmeter on the house batteries?

Okay, both fuses in converter are intact. All breakers on panel are on. Does a converter just stop like that or are there other inline fuses to check?

They can, and do, just die. A check with a voltmeter would confirm that.

This may be a stupid question but just curious why everthing works under generator power though? Does that power not go through the coverter too?

Try starting the generator without running the engine. Everything works under generator power for the same reason everything works from SP with the engine running. The engine alternator is powering the DC buss and charging the house batteries.

Thanks for the info, new converter came in yesterday and with a quick 30 minute installation, lights, wall plugs, and most importantly, AIR CONDITIONER work. Looks like the short fried the microwave and compressor on fridge though.

What short?
I thought everything worked on generator?
The converter has nothing to do with the microwave or fridge compressor.
