Removal of battery: pos first or neg first

I have gone brain dead! Which cable do I remove first the Pos or Neg? For reinstall is it the same?

I always remove negative first then positive and the reverse reconnecting.....positive first then ground. If you try to take off the pos first while the ground (chassis is tied to ground) is still connected, your wrench could touch the chassis and you would change from RVer to Welder in an instant with severe burns a possibility.

The Negative cable is first to remove and last one to put back on . Turn off shore power , battery switch to store . Main negative cable going to the RV. Gloves and eye protection . Avoid wrench from touching any metal.

I do the negative first for the reason given. But be careful anyway. The wrench can also contact the positive post with seriously impressive results.

It doesn't matter from a battery perspective however ^^^ -Neg first is definitely a good safety practice for Neg ground situations like automotive applications.

I was always told to unhook the Negative to keep from accidently causing a short to ground with the wrench. I learned the hard way to pay attention to where your wrench is when I was trying to unhook a large battery in an old army bus we had at work. It resulted in an arc that melted half way through my wrench before I could get it off.

So we have a legitimate question, following the question were 6 answers, all the same basically. Is it really necessary for 6 people to post a reply? Just wondering and curious.

Perpetual problem that will never be solved. Too many people jump on here, see the original post and immediately go to the bottom of page and reply. If folks would just read through the entire thread, this would stop...as would many of the sword throwing contest.

Secondly...there will be those that do read the thread, know the question has been answered spot on, but still want everyone to know..."I knew that!".

Thank you Gritz, I've seen some threads with over 100 replies all basically the same answer.I'm not being critical but it seems like a waste of board space and
time.

It is! My most disliked response...

"I don't know s**t about what you're taking about but someone here does...they'll come along soon...Good Luck and have a great day!!" There are those who feel the accumulated number of posts in their profile is far more important (status symbol) than knowing what they're talking about.

On my favorite hiking forum dedicated to the Appalachian Trail, there is a 21+ page discussion of......coffee! We hikers take that very seriously.

In 1800, Volta invented the first true battery, which came to be known as the voltaic pile. Oh, never mind........

The negative terminal should be removed first. Back in the old days, a lot of Ford Ford vehicles had a positive ground. So to be sure take a voltmeter and make sure that there is no voltage between The ground and the negative terminal. If you remove the ground first you have no possibility of causing a short circuit between your wrench and the vehicle sheet metal. Once you have disconnected the ground terminal everything is safe.
