Onan microquiet 4000 cranking issue

Anyone had this issue with there Onan generator. When you hold down the start button whether it’s inside the house or the one on the generator, it cranks for a split second and then stops and then cranks again and then stops. Most of the time it will start after priming but I can’t pinpoint why it’s doing this. I’ve replaced the solenoid, the starter, and checked all my wiring. Sounds like you covered all the bases. It appears to be a problem with the control to the solenoid. There is a connector that handles wiring to the local and remote starter switches that has been known to have intermittent connection issues. Maybe find and check all those connections in that connector.

Agree with this... If the solenoid engagement is microprocessor controlled - possibly a short on that controller board? Maybe a current sensing issue causing whatever controls the solenoid to disengage?

Is this the connector your talking about the black one right by the solenoid with white wires going in on one side and 3 colored wires on the other.

My motorhome is currently wrapped under a cover, and it's 35 degrees and been raining all day... in other circumstances I would go out, open up the genny door and have a peek...

I'd would run an additional ground wire from the motorhome chassis to the Generator motor and see if that corrects your issue. Weak grounds can cause strange issues in a RV.



If that doesn't fix the problem I'd jump the solenoid to see if it cranks continuously when by-passing the switch. Good luck

Check the voltage at starter while cranking. You may have a bad connection that is dropping the crank voltage and kickout the solenoid. You should maintain at least 10 (more is better) volts while cranking. There may also be an issue with the solenoid. Again, tested with a volt meter while the condition is present.

Ours did that.
The retainer clip on the one of the valve stems was worn. Part number 110-3700.

Check your air filter. Does it show burnt areas where there’s been a flashback ? If so, that’s what it is.
