Retractable Steps

Have a 2018 Thor Siesta 24sj. The retractable steps have stopped working when you open and close the door. They do work when the coach is running, but not when the ignition is off. There is a rocker switch next to the stops that did turn the steps on and off, but that now does not work in either the up or down position. Any ideas on what happened and what I can try to correct this. Thanks in advance.

The first thing. Check the green ground wire under the steps, be careful. Make sure it is getting good contact. The check power at the switch, then check the magnet at the doors, for good contact.

Good luck

Grampa has the right idea, check for power and ground. Also be very careful, that step would not be very forgiving if your fingers or face is in the wrong place and it suddenly works.

Before I retired from working on trucks freightliner actually put out a notice every month with a video on accident prevention and that was a topic when a tech got a finger cut off from working on the linkage in a wiper motor without disconnecting it first.

Step Schematic

Not sure is this general schematic is for you, but it is close enough. Blown fuse or open wire (or bad connection) between house batt and step. If the step works with IGN on, then the step and grounds are fine. There are only two power sources for the step, IGN and House Batt. See attached.

And - yes - be careful working on powered up mechanical stuff! Keep your hands, limbs and face clear.

I would start by checking the switch you said stopped working. That may well be the issue.
