Thanks for the sketch. A question, did your topper ever unspool all the way and roll back up with a bang? Or are we talking small flapping?

Ours has had the wind get under it and unspool all the extra fabric. Makes a heck of a bang when the torsion springs roll it back up! In two locations last spring we ended up retracting the full wall slide to sleep in peace.

If your slideout cover is made by Carefree of Colorado there are instructions on their website on how much to tighten the spring. It is easy on a small slide to adjust the spring tension, but on a long slide it takes two people and a little practice, but once you get the hang of it is easy. The factory topper locks were not properly installed om my cover and a 40 mph gust unfurled my long coverr when traveling. I had to replace the bent brackets and rewind the spring. All it takes a 13/16 open end wrench, a locking pin and a little skill. For me 19 turns and no flapping.

If your toppers flap annoyingly even in light winds, IMO the tension spring needs to be re-tensioned or replaced. Almost 20 years, two motor-homes with slides, never had any issues with the slides or toppers, other than once during a strong wind storm one of the toppers did flap a bit. These things are supposed to make things easier and more pleasant for you, not make you miserable and lose sleep.
