Sprinter Breakdown

I have a 2018 Thor Synergy on the Sprinter E 350 diesel, 6 cyn. It went into limp mode and will not go over 25mph. Over 100 miles to nearest dealer who repairs MB motor homes. Of course towing will not cover the distance, even if the contract says “to the nearest repair facility....
Engine Code is P 1560, EGR overheating. Any suggestions? No one locally will touch it without the correct printout. MB will not share their programming with anyone.
About $1200 cash to have it towed.

Have you tried turning off the engine and then restarting it? Mine went into limp mode when I had it last summer while on vacation 9 different times. Each time I shut it off, removed the key and then restarted it in order to get back on the road. I then took it to my local MB dealership once I made the 2,000 mile trip back home.

Mercedes-benz Sprinter P1560 Engine Trouble Code
Mercedes-benz Sprinter P1560 code can be about replacing a broken oxygen sensor can eventually lead to a busted catalytic convertor which can cost upwards of $2,000. Taking your car into a shop will cost you around $200 depending on the car. However, an oxygen sensor is easy to replace on many cars and is usually detailed in the owner's manual. If you know where the sensor is, you only have to unclip the old sensor and replace it with a new one. Regardless of how you approach it, you should get this fixed right away.
Might be a DIY fix.

Tow it in.
Then
get better towing coverage.

There is likely no other alternative to towing that won't make the MB dealer mad enough to just turn you away when you finally do arrive. They aren't 'bound' to do your repair and I'll half way bet they're disgusted by diy attempts.

Are you capable of the DIY suggestion? Had you read it prior to posting here?
If you break that clip on that sensor you'll scream like a smashed cat.
What alternatives/repairs have you read on Google?

You can be at the dealer in the same time you can wrangle that part and swap it.
Personally, I'd give thst sensor replacement a try.

Punchline:
If you haven't before, don't now.
Tow it.

Sprinter Breakdown

I’d try pulling the negative cable off the chassis battery. Then turn the key to the Run position to kill all of the power in the ECM. Then reconnect the negative cable and see if that clears the error…. at least temporarily.

I have done this before on my ‘18 GMC Canyon with the 2.8L Duramax. It got me home over 600 miles until I could replace the sensor myself.

24 hours later.

Either unconcerned or doesn't care to help others with the same malfunction.

I know she's busy but she took time to ask, so she could take time to answer.

I would also do the disconnect the battery trick. It has worked for me in the past. Head towards the dealer and disconnect the battery every time you get into limp mode. Let us know the outcome.

I take mine to a Dodge dealer as they use the Sprinter chassis and engine. They are very knowledgable and much cheaper and easier to work with than MB. Mine went into limp mode because of a crack in one of the intercooler hoses.

Sprinter Problems

Thanks to all who replied to my message.....
Never got it towed. 3 hours on the phone with insurance co and 3rd party road side assistance co. Had my 40 year old son go through it and found turbo hose leaking air and fixed it. All runs smooth now with no engine light or codes.
Thank again...still could not find anyone within a hundred miles willing to work on a sprinter motor home. Anyone want to buy a nice 25ft
Thor???

Thanks for the follow up.
Your find is exactly why I asked for follow up.

If you hadn't followed up the next guy would have pulled that sensor.

If you don't mine; can you elaborate more on your insurance company and the failures with the road side assistance plan? That may be your biggest problem, perhaps not Thor?

I have roadside assistance with Progressive and Good Sams. If there is some fine print I missed; I would like to know. I don't recall which, but I do recall one had a limit on tow distance and the other was unlimited.

You missed if available which is included in most roadside plans. Many Motorhome owners have had roadside plan issues because their contractors don’t have the ability in certain geographic regions.

Fact of Life. Read the plan to include disclaimers

The main reason I like a simple Ford gasoline-engined motorhome. We can debate whether they are more reliable or not, but to me it brings peace of mind when I am over 1,000 miles from home knowing there is a Ford dealer in just about every small town I have visited.

Sprinter Breakdown

Progressive ins with towing. 15 miles max
OR to the closest authorized repair facility. I went ahead and called/went to see everyplace I could find to repair it. No one would touch it. Either did not have the programming or didn't work on motorhomes. MB dealers included.
Long story short....A MB dealer 123 miles away did motor home repairs and made an appt for Aug 1. $1200 plus to tow it. Ins would only pay $1,000 because it was not on their "list" and would not add them to it.
This was after talking to 2 or 3 people which English was a second language who would only say 15 miles max, you pay $1200 to tow it. Finally got someone from Progressive to understand that is was the closest repair facility.

They got with 3rd party towing company that would only pay up to $1000 for not on their list.
Found a dealer over 200 miles away and one in Ohio (over 300 miles) $2-3,000 that they would cover! Fine, let's go with 200 miles away....had to start all over again with non speaking English who said 15 miles covered, you pay the rest....
Son came over found the problem...fixed it! I gave up, will change towing companies in August.

I have had Progressive for my Boats, Motorcycles and now RV for years. I have the Roadside Assistance for my RV. The way I follow the coverage is below.

1. 15 miles max is only for ANY place of your choice. I mean ANYPLACE. It could be an authorized Progressive Thor dealer 3 miles up the road, but if you wish to tow it to a Wal Mart parking lot 14 miles up the road you can.

2. If you don't wish to specify where you wish to take it (within 15 miles), they will tow it to their nearest authorized repair center. Disclosing what they would charge to a location over 15 miles that was not a Progressive authorized repair facility would be disingenuous to what they offer.

3. Yes, if you had a real breakdown, beyond repair; the authorized repair facility 200 miles away is what they would have covered, the fact that it may have been $2k - $3k to Progressive is irrelevant. It would have been no cost to you.

So why would you be unhappy with Progressive or Thor? It was a failed MB component that was unknown at the time that Progressive was willing to tow 200 miles for you? Roadside assistance coverage is likely less than $20/year out of pocket for you.

Now your son did save you a claim, because I believe you can only have 3 tows per year.

Although it hurts to read all fine print & disclaimers; your point that I have notice you reminding us on issues such as this is duly noted and spot on. Often times, I go with a name brand company which greatly limits my exposure. i.e. I don't care about the details of Amazon's, or Wal Mart's return policy; I just see what I want and buy it. But I never buy on ebay without reading the entire auction twice

With that being said, if this story happened to me, I would have had Progressive tow me 200 miles, because I likely would not have had a hero son come save the say for me. The irony, is that if that had happened, I would have thought it a good story about my roadside assistance plan; not a bad one? Maybe I missed something?

That's a bring down bummer, Man.
I also have a 2017 Thor Citation on a MB sprinter chassis.
Hate it that MB has limp mode in its engine.
Hate it that MB has such few dealers.
Don't, I repeat, don't buy any RV on a sprinter engine.
I was up in Starkville, MS when my Sprinter displayed a message "8 restarts until going into limp mode". I had a 3-hour drive home.
Needless to say, I never turned the engine off.
Really pissed me off that I had to cut my trip short.
Got it to a MB dealer who said a blown fuse under the driver side caused the message.
Never, Never buy a RV with a MB Sprinter engine.
