Steps not working

ACE 32.1 worked fine for a while but now when trying to extend they won't come out. I hear the motor running for a few seconds but nothing happens. I can reach down and pull them out with almost no resistance. Won't go back in either, same thing I can hear motor running for a few seconds but not moving.

Or a stripped gear in the gearbox.

I just finished on my steps. They were stuck in and would not extend. I checked the magnetic switch and could hear it click so I knew the switch was good. When I crawled under it, the step light would come on but no go for the steps. I checked for the 12v dc and found it had good current. The ground was also good. I had to loosen the step mounting bolts in order to get to the control arm pin to release the steps. That had to be done to access the step motor. I removed the cotter pin and opened the steps. I then removed the step motor and checked it. The motor was working great. Apparently it had become stuck in the closed position. I put everything back together and tested it after dry lubing all of the step connection points. The gears had plenty of grease for lubrication. Everything is back into working order. No need to replace the motor at this point. Total time it took me was just under 2 hours. Each time I worked on the steps, I disconnected the power to the motor for safety.

Paul

Waiting on warm weather to replace our step motor. I stripped the gears this winter opening the door with a heavy nylon RV cover strap over the step. Went out to exercise the genny and brain farted that the cover strap was still on when I opened the door. There is always enough maintenance & repairs on an RV without self-inflicted wounds!

To the OP your issue sounds like stripped motor gears. If the controller were bad the step motor likely wouldn't run. New motor on Amazoom is $60 - $80. As Paul said make sure you unplug the steps before you start fooling around under there.

You do t need to replace the motor if your problem is stripped gears. There is a separate gearbox and usually it is the large plastic gear therein that breaks. Under $50 on Amazon.

Check ground wire, make sure it is getting a good ground, check for corrosion. If you are sure it is the gear box.

If you replace the gear box, if you can afford it, parts are all on Amazon, replace, gear box, motor and modular. You be good for years.

About an one hour job, basic skills.

Good luck
