I am just curious what the scrap value of a catalytic converter is? Is it that quick and/or easy to remove?

It is pretty sad that this even happens. In my area, it is wire, copper or aluminum. Burn off the insulation and sell the rest.

My research suggests the scrap value is $100+/-. With an RV, where ground clearance is not a problem, I think an experienced thief with a sharp blade could have it off in under a minute. On my lot they got 6 when they took mine. I guess if you can show up at the recycler with a truck full it’s “worth it”. It’s a vile way to make a living.

There is a definite need for the Junk Yard Dogs.
I know a Kerrville TX storage lot got hit. Makes you want to set up a trip wire.

I would FREAK THE HELL OUT at $300 a month for storage.

I have a motorhome and a trailer 560 a month total.

If you do lose one, don't start the vehicle without a pretty good perusal underneath. A sliced, or even knicked wiring harness or fuel line and the ensuing fire will be your fault.
I'd look, and if unknowing or incapable, I'd have it towed to a shop.[/QUOTE]

That’s a good thought....I looked under at the lost converter but I’ve not crawled in to look for collateral damage. I’m planning to move it to its new digs tomorrow and I’ll explore further before I do. Thank you.

There's thievery...

And then there's mean-spirited thievery!

Checking things out is a great idea!

Thus reminds me of a large storage unit we had which was broken into as were many others in the complex

Thieves were caught eventually after selling off stolen items

Nothing was returned to owners

In order to prosecute the DA needed or wanted 5 owners to agree to testify

Only 4 including me were willing so they just got their hands slapped

In our area the converter thefts seem to be acceptable and bettter than armed robbery

Springfield area is in the top 20 high crime rates in the nation so they are busy

I see universal models for under $200 and model specific aftermarket in the $4-500 range. Also need the O2 sensor of course. The selection is pretty vast. Has anybody done this repair and able to offer a specific replacement or a good vendor? My insurance deductible is $500 so I’m not sure it’s worth submitting a claim. Police said there have been dozens of reports in the last several weeks. Argh, again!
No security cameras??? I'd find another place to store it. Next time could be much worst!!!! Bob

Get someone to load some shells with salt for you
They're non-lethal as long as you don't shoot anyone in the face...

But they'll sting like Hell!!
