Surge suppressor and GFI

I have had issues in the past like many others plugging into a 15 amp GFI protected outlet at home to run fridge and other light loads.

Today I was replacing an outside outlet at my MIL house that is protected by an inside GFI outlet. I wanted to use my surge suppressor as a circuit tester to verify good ground, correct wiring, etc. But as soon as I plug my suppressor into the outlet, the GFI kicks. Nothing plugged into the suppressor at all.

I tried a load that required a grounded connection with no issues so I THINK the outlet is OK. And yes I'll pick up another circuit tester when I can to double check.

I’ve had the same issue and I believe it might be caused by having two GFIs on the same circuit. Two of them in line can cause the problem you have. No doubt you have a GFI outlet in your bathroom. And maybe another on an outside outlet. Try disconnecting them either by turning off the breaker that controls that (those) circuits or just tripping the outlet’s test buttons. I’m guessing that’ll do the trick and it’s certainly easy to try. Good luck
