Find “RVStreet” on YouTube and look for his video on fixing cracked graphics.

The problem with painting over a decal; is that you'll be able to feel the changes where the decals start and stop...

And that won't look very good when the decal peels.

Thanks, I was planning to just paint the decal not any of the surrounding area! Was referred to an RVStreet video on You Tube that describes the method perfectly!

Thanks, Russ

I had fabulous luck with mine. I carefully masked off the decal and gave the quickest wipe with lacquer thinner on a HD Shop Towel paper towel, then painted with Hammertone paint. The trailer was subject to thousands of miles on the road, pressure washer baths and 3 years in the hot AZ sun by Phoenix before I sold it. The painted decals looked great to the very end...
I will try to attach some photos here... The last photo was 3 years later as Camping World hot-shot was dragging it into the sunset...

Ken

I would think if your graphics are faded the RV is also. Rather then paining. There is a product called Polly Glow and Prep. I used this on a 2000 AClass and it looked like new. It’s hard to believe but everything came back to life. It can be purchased at Amazon. It takes five coats and easy to put on . If you have a lot of wax on it clean with the prep first. The coats dry fast and rye first two doesn’t change much but then it starts to glow. After a year just put on one coat each year to maintain! It will look new I think the kit is around $70.00

A couple of years ago I painted the decals on our previous motorhome. They had started to crack into a billion pieces from shrinkage. They hadn't started peeling. I went to the auto parts store and found cans of car paint that were very close matches (3 different colors). Then went to house paint store and got some 7 mil sheet vinyl that they use as drop cloth. And I got lots of blue masking tape. Cleaned the old decals very carefully with alcohol, masked off the areas using the vinyl sheeting and tape, then spray painted over the old decals. They came out very nice and lasted about 4 years longer. I will say that I was very meticulous with the edges and it paid off nicely. DW was flabbergasted at the outcome! Seems the paint actually slowed up the cracking too and the whole coach looked great after waxing.

I have a friend who peeled off the bad decals (looked like they were rusting), cleaned off the residue, painted on the same color and design of the ones removed. Looks great but he had all the equipment to do it and it was time consuming.

Seeing Ford1's post reminded me of something: Do you spend all that time, effort, and expense: and then watch it start to peel or crack?

UV is some pretty bad stuff down south. You can chase after the decals with an anti-UV like 303 Aerospace, but I still think it’s going to be a losing battle for anything vinyl that’s out in the elements 7x24 in places like AZ, NM, TX et al...
Paint has a better chance than nekkid vinyl IMHO if it is kept waxed...

The most important step to any painting is prep. As the foundation is the most important thing. Why paint over them and not remove them? If your going to take the time to do it, why not just do it right?

I agree that it would be preferable to remove the old decals first, but unless you have done that successfully then you might reconsider the options and the final results. We were quite satisfied with the results.....as were the couple who purchased it from us a few years later. They kept in contact with us for three years before trading it in for a newer model. They even commented that the graphics still looked good except for the Georgetown decals on the rear that had curled and chipped (I had not painted over that since it looked good at the time.)
The original question was if anyone had ever painted over them and how were the results. My reply was based on my experience in doing so. If the question had been how does it compare to a full body paint job or a new Featherlite 45 footer, then I would have answered appropriately.
I don't know if it bothers anyone else when forum members directly criticize a responders methods or replies. It would seem to me that if someone has another thought or idea, it would be more considerate to reply with those ideas as possible alternative solutions, less criticism of those trying who have offered with their own thoughts. The way I see it, I wasn't talking to them in the first place!
