Tail lights on but don't brighten when brake is pressed

Has anyone ever come across this? All of the lights are on so they aren't burnt out- they just don't get any brighter when you apply the brakes.

brake lights

Hi, Kels. Are the bulbs led or standard? If they are a standard bulb, they have 2 filaments in them. 1 for tail and 1 for brake. If that isn't it, it is probably the brake light switch behind the brake pedal.

You could test the 7-wire plug brake light pin: If the voltage there changes when the brake pedal is pressed then the problem is with the lights or the wiring to the lights.

An easy way to test the 7-wire plug is with a 7-wire tester (Amazon) you also can pick these up at auto parts stores.

Check the brake light switch. It's probably near the brake pedal. It might need an adjustment or replacement.

They are LED. We cannot find the brake light switch!

Given the differences between Ford's quality and Thor's quality in general I would suspect that it is not the switch at the brake pedal (that would most likely be Ford's responsibility).

Thinking on this further: Have you tried the turn signals or the emergency flashers? If it doesn't flash for either of those I would suspect the wiring to the lights.

Another way to check the brake switch at the pedal is to get an OBD-II interface and watch for the brake switch input (On Ford's I believe its called "BOO"). Since the switch goes to a module then the signal is sent out on the CAN bus.

I just went out and pressed my brake pedal. You should hear a definite clicking noise from a relay in the fuse panel. Another way you could check is hook up a boat or utility trailer and see if the brake lights work.
