carburetor onan 4000 flooding . i can pinch off gas hose and it will run strong until i release gas hose

Sounds like the carb float or valve is not working properly. Back in the day, a slight rap on the side of the carb bowl would sometimes free a stuck float, but maybe best to remove the carb and see what is going on. Could have some debris in it, broken tab etc. You have done a good job tracking down the problem.
