YIKES! Propane service valve stuck

Gonna tell you a story 'bout a coach name Thor...
On Friday (of course) preparing to leave on a trip (of course) I decided to install an extend-stay tee. As I rolled the valve closed I felt a slight resistance, 3 clicks (like ratcheting) before it stopped, closed. I removed the regulator, installed the tee, regulator, opened the valve and bubble tested the connections. Boy that was easy. So I went inside, bled the stove and... no gas! Only a wee teensy flame. Pulled the tee, repeated steps, 4-7. No change. Consulted gurus, bought and replaced the regulator (yeah, I know, go with the gut). Same story, only a whisper of flame. The RV dealer said they could replace the service valve, in a week, after some serious diagnosis, gauges and meters, you know. I'm exhaused from googling propane tank repair (think bbq results) Amazon sells the exact tank, complete, for $357 delivered which sounds cheaper than RV dealer rates.
This isn't fun anymore. Wha-wha-wha.

So you must have a Paul Bunyan grip to lodge the main propane tank valve closed on a newer coach. Since there is gas in the tank you are probably/rightly concerned about taking steps to unlodge the valve with pliers/snipe etc just in case you cause a major failure/leak/fire etc. If the Stealer (Dealer) can’t get you in quickly, have you tried calling “major/reputable” commercial/retail propane only dealers in your location? Not the corner propane shack. You may find that the big guys have expertise in dealing with this situation and may be able to free the valve safely; recover the gas and replace valve/refill for a more reasonable cost/ time frame.

Have you tried closing the valve again, let it sit for 5 minutes to reset the leak stop valve, then cracked it open realllllly slowlllly?

Are there any businesses nearby that sell propane powered appliances? They might be able to help...
Good luck!

Nope, not Popeye, I think that resistance and clicks I felt was the separation. It seems like the failsafe "antisurge" is the problem but I haven't found a diagram or cutaway showing how/where that might be. I can close the valve but only scant trickle when I open real sloooowly. I've played throughout the day trying. Off 5 mins, 15 mins and so on. It would take a week for me to burn off the tank with that tiny flame I've tried to keep going at the stove. Tomorrow, I start calling the propane service companies. I had no luck on Saturday. Thanks for the support!

Oh no. Sorry to hear about your problems. This is yet another mod on my list as well.

I bet some propane service (or RV shop) can evaculate the tank, replace the valve then fill the tank for like $100 or so.

Let us know how it turns out so we can help others.

Yikes! the Follow Up

Embarrassingly, I admit, I fell into a trap of assumption. Because I "believed" the resistance and clicking I felt in the service valve (and fit with what I read about the slam shut valve shutoff allowing a trickle of flow) I did find a propane delivery service that would change out the valve (no saving the gas). As he prepared to begin, he backed of the POL retaining nut (bushing?) about a quarter turn and opened the valve...plenty of flow. The valve was good. There was enough back pressure, by cracking the nut, to NOT trip the slam shut. So $180 later for his diagnostic exam, we determine it was the Dometic stove (regulator or both thermo couples). I was so stuck on my assumption of the service valve (whoever heard of a stove failing? DOH!) that I didn't test everything else.

So, the Dometic servicing dealer didn't get back to me and Amazon provided a $100 2 burner drop-in (with some modifying) and I'm off to Quartzsite.
